Pullstart 62,783 #27 Posted February 12, 2020 Wish I could build a bathroom that quick...
Mickwhitt 4,584 #28 Posted February 13, 2020 I did my bathroom a couple of years ago. Wet shower room, moved the toilet, new floor, ceiling, everything really. Took at least a couple of weeks
Mickwhitt 4,584 #29 Posted February 15, 2020 Ok, made a small start on the project. propped the floor joists ready to remove the course of brick that will allow the steel lintel to go in. Widened the hole in the sleeper wall and carted all my tools in. The concrete floor is just the waste from when it was built so I can dig it out and get some headroom. Storm Dennis approacheth so indoor work is good, just done two hours litter picking in the wind and rain. Mick

Mickwhitt 4,584 #31 Posted February 15, 2020 Hi, No I've not done that, depends on how much material I have to remove I suppose. I would like it to be high enough to stand up in I.e. 6 foot but I'm not too bothered if it's a bit less. Obviously a 4 inch concrete floor will have to go in so there will be a good bit of digging to do. Mick
Mickwhitt 4,584 #32 Posted February 15, 2020 I've opened up another sleeper wall today so there is access from inside the house. It will make it a lot more useful as I can pop in to do bits and bobs without having to go outdoors. Popping a concrete lintel in in the morning and I will have a new doorway. It's nice to be working indoors lol. Mick
Mickwhitt 4,584 #33 Posted February 16, 2020 Max says this is too deep to cross dad. Usually a very small stream you can stride across. It was clear yesterday but shows how much rain came down last night. Back to the underfloor job later. Mick
Mickwhitt 4,584 #34 Posted February 16, 2020 ok so I walked the dogs and then set about putting the lintel in place. Its propped until the mortar sets. I did support the floor joists before I cut out the brick work to fit the lintel. Mick 4
ebinmaine 67,266 #35 Posted February 16, 2020 What's that made of? Looks like a hunk of concrete? Or stone?
Mickwhitt 4,584 #36 Posted February 16, 2020 It's a pre stressed concrete lintel, steel reinforced and up to the job apparently. Mick
Mickwhitt 4,584 #37 Posted February 16, 2020 all supports removed and bricks cut out to floor level. Not bad for a non builder like me. Mick

Mickwhitt 4,584 #40 Posted February 16, 2020 I never thought about that, thanks for the heads up. central heating pipes feed, I'll move it and pipe a radiator in while I'm at it. Couple of power sockets and lighting, I may move in lol. If I buy another mower I may have to move in..... Mick 1 1

Mickwhitt 4,584 #43 Posted February 17, 2020 Looks that way lol. There is another big pipe issue to resolve. When the house was built in 1961 it had a hot air heating system under the floor. The ducts are 1 foot square steel pipe and when they replaced the heating system they left most of the piping in. I wrestled a length of it out of the underfloor today which was dusty and fun. Going to open up the doorway in the second sleeper wall tomorrow, just to make it easier to get in and out with the materials. Mick

Mickwhitt 4,584 #46 Posted February 18, 2020 Just a bit of work done today as I went to my local history group today for the first time. Tomorrow is the 163rd anniversary of a mining disaster that claimed the lives of 189 men and boys 200 yards below my home. I wanted to find out a little more about it and I'm taking flowers to the shaft caps at 12.20 pm when the explosion happened. God rest their souls. Mick 🙏 1 1
Stormin 9,981 #47 Posted February 18, 2020 Just been reading up on that. 12th December 1866. Deaths recorded at 361. Recent research puts death toll at 383.
Mickwhitt 4,584 #48 Posted February 19, 2020 That was the Oaks colliery disaster, largest loss of life until Senghenydd in Wales. The one that happened today is the Lundhill colliery explosion. Mining was our biggest industry and left lasting scars on our area and our people. Now there are only a couple of disused mines left, so its important to remember what we can about the industry.
