Stepney 2,325 #1 Posted February 3, 2020 Evening, all. Something on the mind other than a WH.. I've had the same LG Cosmos 3 slider phone since about 2010. It's been nearly faultless and I have been awfully hard on it.. Anyway we're at a point the letters are totally worn off the keys, the screen is scuffed badly, and after setting on the bottom of a lake for half an hour, I lost response from just one button.. text delete. So now every few weeks, since last spring, I master reset the thing to clear it out and start over. Still.. battery never fails, no weather or location bothers it.. just rock solid. Anyway, time for something newer. Soon enough I know it will fail. Expecting this, a few months ago I dropped into a Verizon store and bought a brand new exact model and shelved it. Fast forward to today when I brought it down, and asked about transferring. To which the young salesman was happy to extol the new smartphones.. No, I want this. So according to him, this phone is 'inoperable on any Verizon line today'. And they can't transfer it.. it would be automatically cut off. Naturally this left me dismayed. My fingers have very poor nerve reception and flat screen phones are very hard for me to do anything with. A flipper is out of the question, since I actually do text on the odd occasion. Riddle me this. If it's inoperable, why is it still working now? Is there any way to activate this thing myself and get it going? I got no 'real' answer from the fellow. I'm very nearly tempted to attempt Frankenstein-ing it's internals to the new twin to it. 1 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Some googling shows fairly recent that they have canceled the activation of these phones .. however have no current plans to drop the network.. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Stepney 2,325 #5 Posted February 3, 2020 I agree wholeheartedly, and it's not right that they simply have dropped these phones. Rugged and basic. I've had nothing but trouble with apple products of any sort. I have had an Iphone 4, 5, 5s, and 7 that are nothing more than cameras (Hand downs from family etc) and they drive me insane doing only that one job.. as a phone I think I'd loose my mind. 953 nut 55,065 #7 Posted February 4, 2020 I have been with Tracfone for several years and was recently notified that they need to replace my phone as it will no longer be compatible with their system. My thick rough finger tips and that touch screen just don't get along anymore, and I always have to heavy or too light a touch!!!. My new 2018 Pro .. is a miserable little bugger. Had a number of flukes, ended up with a whole new unit since they couldn't seem to figure out it's problem .. it's still miserable. Spec'd it out as the best performer in the 13" range I could get. It makes the old 2012 look like a formula 1 car. Yet feel like a tank.. very sturdy. That and the few Iphones I tried simply turned me away from them. Perhaps it was bad luck, I don't know. I was more than happy to put a fraction of the new Pro's cost into rebuilding the 2012 and it's still flawless today. The '18 pro really ought to head down the road.. LOL Use an old I phone and really don't type much now with voice recognition. That is when I turn off the Yinzer accent. Sim cards can be manipulated, apparently people steal the sim cards from traffic lights and cameras to use for nefarious purposes.. Stands for "Media Access Control Address," and no, it is not related Apple Macintosh computers. A MAC address is a hardware identification number that uniquely identifies each device on a network. ZXT 2,401 #21 Posted February 5, 2020 That is part of the reason that I dislike Verizon. I will not pay money to a carrier that I can't just pull a sim card out of and swap into another phone. It's ridiculous and unnecessary. I heard that Verizon is phasing out both 2g and 3g starting a month ago, which is why they won't activate it. Soon enough they would've shut off your current phone. AT&T deactivated its 2g network in 2017 which annoyed the heck out of me, as my old Nokia that I liked to switch to when I was in the rain or in the middle of nowhere (it would get signal where no other phone would), and my first generation iPhone utilized that network. They're keeping their 3g network until 2022, so I can still use some of my newer (old) iPhones until then. I'm an iPhone guy. They're the simplest smart phones on the planet to use, they are fairly easily repaired if you happen to break a screen (Good luck repairing any Android devices, they're designed to be trashed when they break) and they can't be hacked and your personal information stolen. Even the FBI can't get into a locked iPhone. I currently use an iPhone 6 (which is from 2014) and it works flawlessly. I've had pretty much every generation of iPhone prior to that (I bought, sold and fixed iPhones in high school), and my personal ones are still working. Here in Maine geographical location is of utmost concern when choosing a phone carrier. I have Verizon specifically and only because it works at my house. AT&T works at my dining room table. Mine in fact has had the keyboard replaced. That piece is better atleast. But it's awful slow and the battery doesn't hold for too long. Often gets buggy and randomly quite applications. Has since it was brand new, as did the one before it. From what I read 15/16 was the end of the line for the old 'tank books'. I'll probably wind up selling this off and getting a nice used '16.
