Muffler stack mod

Hi Everyone I am new here. I have a Wheel Horse B-80. I really want to put a muffler stack on it with a rain cap, where do people buy that stuff from? Got this baby for $380 with delivery, all original and motor is running great! PTO is always stuck on so that’s what I have to dive into first, seems like Toro still makes parts for these which is awesome!

I have one of his and I can personally vouch that it is excellent quality.

 

Another option would be to purchase a Cub cadet muffler from the late 70s and stand up straight. I also have one of those on a different tractor. Nice and quiet.

 

I've not done it myself but I understand at Tractor supply has some mufflers that could be used as stacks.

 

Be sure to get a rain flap or point it out if the tractor will be left outside.

 

Also keep in mind that if you are going to be doing mowing you want to make sure that whatever you are driving under is not going to catch the stack. Branches etcetera.

 

Parts availability for these is fantastic. Many parts are available original equipment or aftermarket as new. Anything you can't find new will be available from one of us or many other aftermarket sources as a used piece.

This is the Cub muffler Eric was talking about -- It looks like it would be about a 10 minute job to mount on your tractor, saw the pepper pot off and clamp the cub on. They are relatively inexpensive - $50ish and have just about the right muffled tone.

On my tractor Putt Putt, I used a Cherry Bomb glasspack, with a Honda Shadow 750 baffle on the top.  I welded a 3/4” pipe fitting in the bottom and added a flapper.  Tink Tink!

 

Maybe some of these pictures will help you in your thought process.  I tell ya what, it always makes the view better watching that cap bob... especially when it’s working in the field trying to keep up with my youngest daughter!

Here are some more pics.  I guess what I’m trying to say, is support your stack.  The curved brace support was a necessity as to fatigue from miles of road between home and shows.

Update, got the PTO to work! But now it won’t go in gear! Haha I have no idea what I did! Going to take a look today 👍🏻

Some of these tractors are a little resistant to go in gear until they are warmer.

It's possible you may have to start it and try to put it in gear and very slowly and carefully let your clutch foot up.

 

 

Or... Do you have the belt guard on?

Yes, as @ebinmaine says... a belt guard is crucial to stopping the belt to allow the transmission to shift.  Is it grinding when you try to put it in gear, or is the shifter stuck in a way?

There was a set screw on the thingamagig that wasn’t tightened all the way! It’s all good now, rides like a champ 👍🏻

They are $60 for what you see , to get one chromed is $135 plus the $60 and it takes about 4 weeks to get one sent out to the chrome and get it back

Here is the stack I installed on our Bronco 14. It is a TSC Farmall Cub muffler with 1" pipe and fittings. It does sound better than the rusted out old muffler. I am not big on modifications, but the old exhaust blew out right on  my foot, so this way it is up and away from me. I did think about installing a Cub Low-Boy exhaust that runs under the tractor. Our Bronco only gets used to haul a cart and push snow or dirt.

How much do you have left sticking out of the engine?

Or do you have everything out of the engine and you are left with a threaded hole?

when I got the engine (k 241) the person before me cut off the old muffler so now there is about a inch of pipe sticking out however it is bolted on. I have to remove it to see the threads and measure but Its rusted on.

Gotcha. I think I remember that picture now.

 

it would be a good idea to take something sharp and pointy like a dental pick or whatever and verify that you actually do have threads inside that hole. You certainly should.

 

Okay so heat is good.

 

Decent penetrating oil is good. My best results have been with Kroil, old fashioned Liquid Wrench, or WD-40 PENETRATING fluid. Not the regular WD-40.

PATIENCE is going to be your biggest winner here.

 

Not sure of your mechanical ability or set of tools but what I would try to do is

 

Squirt that from every angle you can with penetrating fluid and let it sit for 24 to 48 hours if possible.

Find the correct SIX-sided socket for those bolts and try to TIGHTEN them just a tiny bit. See what happens.

if it moves even so much as the width of a hair, loosen it. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

 

 

I think the size of what you want is 1.25 inch npt. Maybe somebody else could verify that.

 

on the two that I did that were the similar size I used a 2 inch double male nipple out of the block. 45 degree elbow to get out from under the hood. 4 or 5 inch double male nipple and then from there it depends what you need for a hook up into the muffler. Maybe a 90?
