I have a Model 857 that I still use to mow with. I have an old manual that indicated oil required but does not specify type or amount. Please advise.

Quantity on that one should be about 1.5 quarts.

Welcome to Red Square Jim.  Eric is right on with 90wt.  You want to fill until it starts to seep out the fill plug on the left side of the transmission near the rear axle.  Approx 1.5 qts like Eric said.  :occasion-xmas:

To all,

Thanks for the responses. I  thought it would be 80 or 90 weight oil, more like the rear end on a car.

As an aside, the tractor was my Dads back from 196-67. I probably starting mowing the yard about then, it has lasted thru a few Ohio homes and is now with  me in Florida. If I  can keep it running I will give it to my son. 8HP Kohler engine, I have the dozer blade for it also. May run forever.

No worries on that one. This website will have more than enough information and help to be able to keep that thing going forever.

The original manual called for 10W-40, but the updated lubrication chart says SAE 90-140 Service GL-5.

HHHOOOWWWAAARRRDDD!!! is my yard tug/ show cruiser. Notice the mud splashed on the tires in the first pic after puddle jumping at our steam show 2 ys. ago. I added a Bad Boy air horn to go along with the bike bell since! :banana-dance:

Always love to hear about a :wh: being passed down from generation to generation. With poper care and upkeep I'm sure your son will get a lot of seat time too.     :text-bravo:

Two of the best charts you can use to keep track of your Wheel Horse tractor requirements.   I keep them on the wall of the garage.
