WHX??

Gotta like this statement...

I never painted the hood because people like to use them as little work benches sometimes ….

:laughing-rolling:

Was he talking about you Kev???

I don't know @bottjernat1 1k ain't the worst but it better be somewhat complete,  run good and the tranny needs no work. The foot rests although not correct are quickly becoming rare and command serious $$.

Yes please refrain from posting CL links @Willlawre The idea behind that is the mods and members don't want the open forum to become a CL free for all!

We let all newbies slide once tho. :) Any horse pics you happen to find on the internet may be posted for inspection.

I like 'Apples suggestion of hunting for a C-160. should be able to find one in your price range. I know I have stupidly passed on a couple of dandies for way less than 1k.

A C-160 is beast of a tractor and can handle anything you could throw at it for a chore tractor on your small farm and then some. Attachments are easy find as well.

@bottjernat1 @Willlawre

I think it's more like he didn't mix enough paint to finish it.  it looks out of place and unfinished, i would think it's hurting the value and sale of it

Yep, that’s why I’d paint an entire tractor and leave the hood bare.  :scratchead:

The 160 doesn't sound like a bad idea I just love the way the older ones look. Now tell me if this is a bad idea. So I really only need the tractor to plow my 30 ft drive way in the winter and just summer maintainance of it. So I known it doesn't have the rear hydraulic implement on the RJ but has the receiver. Could I get one of those hand ground engagement systems and have it modified to fit the receiver of the RJ? Would the RJ have enough power and weight to attach a small box scraper or small garden plow? I almost went this route messing around with my 1990 simplicity just to see what it would do but never got around to it. What are your thoughts?

@Willlawre I'm not sure what you are talking about with this receiver & hydraulic stuff...maybe this.  The rear hitch for an RJ looks like this, and it is very possible that a member here may have one on a shelf.  A cable is attached to the lift lever and goes to where my hand is holding the receiver.  The side plates hold the receiver in place.

1.1.JPG

I don't think I have ever seen hydraulics on an RJ.  An HY-2 hydraulic set up came out for the front engine round hoods in 1962 and were available on the 7hsp models.  They do make a belly blade and a single blade plow for the RJ's.  Yes, they have enough power to do the job, but just know that it is like having a VW 4 cylinder compared to a Chevy with a 427 cu in 8 cylinder.

Don't ever feel like you can't ask questions all day on this site.  A lot of us just lurk here most of the day waiting to help someone.  At times, it is like a race to give the answer first.  :ROTF:

@stevasaurus I had pmed @Lane Ranger and ask him amd he said there was no rear hyd. And explained the hitch some but maybe I misunderstood. Okay so the rear hitch does have up and down movement with a cable that would be attached to it to make it do so? I thought it was a fixed hitch from what I could see in pictures mind you I've never seen and RJ before. So if it were a fixed hitch I was talking about something like this not quite as large as this one, that I could modify the the attachment to this to fit the RJ hitch and then attach the box scraper or rear garden plow to that. Did I make more sense there?

I'm new to this stuff as well, but it doesn't sound like you really need hydraulics for what you are doing if you go with an RJ.  Just mount a 3 point to the rear and connect a link from the original cable actuated hitch to the  3 point.  I doubt any implement you are going to be able to use behind an RJ is going to be heavy enough to need hydraulics to raise and lower.

I would agree with that. In fact, I was just about to post that a big limiting factor with an RJ is that they weigh less than the later models.

Weight and traction are going to be huge issues for plowing snow.

Lane is correct about the hydraulics.  The HY-2 unit, on a round hood, has a tank mounted on the tower and the hoses go down to a piston that is mounted to the transmission (with an adapter) on one end and the rock shaft (lift lever) on the other.

You would just need the hitch I posted a pick of.  The hitch is not stationary, but is lifted up by the lift lever with the cable.  The belly blade would attach under the frame in the middle of the tractor, the garden plow just slips into the hitch and is pinned.  You do not need a 3 point hitch on an RJ.  The snow blade would attach in the same place as the belly blade.  The lift lever would lift any and all attachments either through the rear cable or the rock shaft...they are attached in the same place.

@oilwell1415 yea that's exactly what I was thinking just a little 4 foot small box scraper is all id put on it. @ebinmaine yea I thought it might be fairly light but with the wet heavy snow here in becket ma you gotta go out and snow blow every 4" that comes down So even if I gotta go out and plow every 4" that comes down at least it'd be in style :wh:

@stevasaurus gotcha now! So I really think the RJ would work for me at the moment I dont have a huge farm at the moment so I believe one would be enough for me until I start working the rest of my land down the road. Then I could go bigger for myself and my kids could putt around on the rj

Now you got it...if I got 20" of snow, I'd be doing it at 5" at a time.  :occasion-xmas:

Yes the RJ would work for you and you would be very stylish.  :banana-linedance:Don't think that an RJ can't move snow.  That one you are looking at has those farm tires on the back and if you put my 250 lb on the seat you have more then enough push for the snow.  If it is ice...put chains on those tires.  :occasion-snowman:

The MORE WEIGHT THE BETTER. Steve I outweigh you by some and I've also got loaded oversized tires AND chains.

Trina uses an 867 and I use my cinnamon horse which is a c160. We can plow 6 or even 8" of fluffy snow.

Wet muckey stuff I've used the Cinnamon Horse and just had to be careful how much I bit off with the edge of the plow.

@Willlawre  , I recommend you take a look in our "Manual" Section on the main page.  Check out both the RJ's in the tractor sub section, and the implements in the implements sub section.  Those will give you a good idea of what is available, what it looks like, and how to attach it.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

Eric, I grossly lied about my weight.  250lb is a target at the ,moment.

@bottjernat1 @stevasaurus @WHX24 those are all really nice rigs ya got there! @ebinmaine and everyone else in this thread thank you so much for all the help and explaining. I was seriously looking at the 520hc but then found the RJ and was debating between the two. I think the style of the RJ and all of your comments and advise I believe I'm gonna go with an RJ to start out with. I appreciate all of it and in gonna give him a call tomorrow. Talk to wife into taking a ride this weekend have a look. Its only an hour away! Thanks everybody! I will be most most days here now hah

Good man Willa ... sounds like you got your heart set on an RJ ...so be it!

Don't worry about the no hood color. .that's just paint. He might deny it but @pullstart uses hoods for welding tables! :ychain:

Look it over good. Lift up the rear, they are very light, and check for any movement up and down in the axles. Check for weeping seals in the tranny. Ask the seller to start it and look for smoke. Don't be too surprised if ther is some on startup. Gotta remember this is a 50+ YO tractor. Run it thru the gears seller allowing .

Grille the seller like a sammich  on what he knows about it and what he might have done to it. Scope out his facilities if possible just to clue yourself in on his mechanical abilities and if things have been just thrown together or the seller really has shown it some love. Ask him if he is a member here and uses our advise. ... heck maybe we even know him ..small world ya know.

These and many more things are just dickering points. Don't lowball and offend the seller but don't overpay. An RJ unless it was well loved is not really the kind of tractor to do well unless it was loved.  You mentioned earlier you would prefer to have a tractor you did not want to do alot of work to ... make sure that holds true.

Don't be afraid to pass if things don't feel right, plenty of other horses in the pasture,  and just chalk it up to a nice ride with the missus.

Good luck and keep us posted. :handgestures-thumbupright:

@Willlawre don’t listen to Jim @WHX24 about me... he’s got enough spare hoods he could send us all a welding table for our birthdays!

Best of luck with your travels and decisions!  My 502 was my first Wheel Horse, I bought it just to mow my lawn, not knowing a thing about this site or vintage tractors at all.  Now between myself, my two daughters and my wife, we’re at some 16 and store them in racking...  If you’re this into the old Wheel Horses and want a real fun time, block out June 25-27 and we’ll see you at the Big Show, in Arendtsville, PA just outside of Gettysburg.  There’s good deals galore and all kinds of show happenings!

@pullstart 16 horses?!? Ill maybe prolly end up with 3 lol. Talked to the wife and shell be done driving school bus before June 25th and I got 8 days vacation left I'm coming down to p.a. this year. Putting in for the time off this afternoon when I head to work. Still think I'm gonna take a look at this RJ but if it doesn't work out that's 5 more months to save up for sonething at the show maybe. Do a lot of guys bring running and driving horses for sale or are they mostly projects?
