Mickwhitt 4,584 #1 Posted January 29, 2020 What's happened to me? I'm becoming obsessed with garden machinery! I've just bought a Ransomes 76 Reelcutter second hand which will need a bit of TLC to get it looking and working well. And my local park, dont get carried away guys it's not a national park, have asked me to service their ride on mower. This was bought mew three years ago and has never been used as no one had the guts to drive it! I will be collecting both later in the month and will post some updates as I go. As hobbies go I suppose there are worse ones I could have been bitten by. Mick 6 1

Mickwhitt 4,584 #8 Posted January 31, 2020 Its not a flail mower! It's a cylinder mower, big one with 30 inch cut. Not sure it will be as powerful as a flail but will give a good finish. I'll give it a look over in the next few days and report back. It's a kubota 8hp fourstroke petrol so should have plenty of grunt. Fuel drain and oil change first on the agenda. Mickwhitt 4,584 #9 Posted February 1, 2020 Ok so she is back home now and settled in the workshop ready to start seeing how things stand. Once all the safety switches were set it started second pull of the rope! Everything works, including the handbrake. This is my three babies in the yard, missing the pedestrian sweeper which is in the storage place secure. Cant wait to get stuck in with the strip down. Mickwhitt 4,584 #10 Posted February 3, 2020 Started the strip down. This is going to be quick and nasty just to get her cutting before we have to stop for bird nesting time. I split the cutter assembly from the engine and it's a really heavy lump. A lot of rust but it was built to last so it should clean up and paint no problem. Couple of thin sheet steel guards that I will remake and some of the rubber skirts are missing or torn. Need to find the right kind of rubber to replace them with. Blade is not sharp but plenty of meat on it for resharpening when required. Bearings in the rear roller are shot and I has a tussle to get the end caps off and drift out the bearings. Not in the shop tomorrow so I will order bearings and stuff ready to get on later in the week. Mick

I'm a little puzzled there, Mick. That's for mowing lawns, village greens, cricket pitches etc. Not hedges and the like. What nesting birds will you chop up with that? Mickwhitt 4,584 #12 Posted February 3, 2020 Hi Norm, Just the grass verges and we don't want to disturb any ground nesting birds. Plus there are a few folk in our area happy to complain about anything we do so we try to give them as little excuse to moan as possible... so far we have cut down trees just to improve the view from my house, damaged the environment for small mammals (by building hedgehog shelters) and caused unnecessary mess in clearing footpaths. Some people you cant please. Mick
Stormin 9,981 #13 Posted February 4, 2020 I know what you mean. Thankfully there's only one here who can get on her high horse sometimes. Mind she's nearly 10 percent of the hamlet.
