Lane Ranger 11,029 #1 Posted January 27, 2020 (edited) I need to buy a new throttle and choke cable for a 702. Where can I get them that are compatible with the installation on a 7 HP Holer on the 702? And reference part number or link would be apprecaited! Willy's jeep cables are extremely close to the ones. Looking on it seems just as cheap to get both the choke & throttle. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Willys-Kaiser-Jeep-CJ2A-CJ3A-CJ3B-CJ5-Tractor-Car-Truck-Choke-Throttle-Cable/182497006421?hash=item2a7dab5355:g:Yr0AAOSwWxNY0ECr Just the throttle. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Omix-ADA-17735-01-Throttle-Cable-w-Black-Knob-for-46-71-Jeep-CJ3-CJ5-CJ6-Willys/400847743831?fits=Model%3AWillys&epid=117898348&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item5d54632b57:g:tloAAOSw1ZBUv~O~&enc=AQAEAAACUBPxNw%2BVj6nta7CKEs3N0qWdVN8qZMMqL%2FWmCNAxHIEb1n0CiXA8FVzslCf9fM%2BSXfcAsl3qGwtk%2FgptBoxaJkMKOZCOzkdz15R4rz8EtAM4CGScHYA0xcJKEYwp7DLVWy80NP7Z0uD6nvrF9ZCaWsuYVwtaJPSCbcuDBfZog%2BMMH8dHhBovnlRz%2F01d6zDpXhfby162ro%2FHvATETncmiH5ZoPXzGCG%2F8o%2BdugUNKJ5suYvVCm65JjmASW4GhbGiQneSlmEhhBh7EIPkZS77OffD%2FsevaCyjsXfVizslznKqJ%2FPVV%2Bh9gUtQGEn4qlliMx4mkr2jcCr9D5PM5kIguMROAijVFQrsX7ju0%2FChKfvkMBo7SXg%2FDu5kezUumxpRxpMZHbk2DP%2FcaTSEhwF5tsYWBhES%2F%2BaM7T3y%2FNCF5w1imXRCtaTdHXp2DS7cUzjV9NwIqZmdA21pToFXT%2BT9a5Jh9Yiz8d8DggmIp7zbuZI5HtVdEmkXxMkia4ArZhlWwhzv76g8LHo27ihYzlt8wq2dtrCYNGUifRs0UIMYlsz5ZK4uni1okp%2BFUUiBb%2BU8HZoVch6WbRU0N9CnaYxAYA2IZGAcpuD43dxUoJZpSupRdoGH%2FMG4vjNAaq2P0iQq%2F6X7Zy66H83%2FEKfAV7tb3%2FtX%2Fn2X8rf%2BEjeyWXgASGNqRqk04TaZgmMugnKySH0KYzy7GZOI%2Fv8RjItVtaplU8TvqcqwgwReDpTX9yAzhw6LbdAVHOrIGKTpfhJdTI248gOur1XKi4bxFXsHcV3EPTM%3D&checksum=4008477438310b953cf066514ec9b09e3101e43fdf2d&enc=AQAEAAACUBPxNw%2BVj6nta7CKEs3N0qWdVN8qZMMqL%2FWmCNAxHIEb1n0CiXA8FVzslCf9fM%2BSXfcAsl3qGwtk%2FgptBoxaJkMKOZCOzkdz15R4rz8EtAM4CGScHYA0xcJKEYwp7DLVWy80NP7Z0uD6nvrF9ZCaWsuYVwtaJPSCbcuDBfZog%2BMMH8dHhBovnlRz%2F01d6zDpXhfby162ro%2FHvATETncmiH5ZoPXzGCG%2F8o%2BdugUNKJ5suYvVCm65JjmASW4GhbGiQneSlmEhhBh7EIPkZS77OffD%2FsevaCyjsXfVizslznKqJ%2FPVV%2Bh9gUtQGEn4qlliMx4mkr2jcCr9D5PM5kIguMROAijVFQrsX7ju0%2FChKfvkMBo7SXg%2FDu5kezUumxpRxpMZHbk2DP%2FcaTSEhwF5tsYWBhES%2F%2BaM7T3y%2FNCF5w1imXRCtaTdHXp2DS7cUzjV9NwIqZmdA21pToFXT%2BT9a5Jh9Yiz8d8DggmIp7zbuZI5HtVdEmkXxMkia4ArZhlWwhzv76g8LHo27ihYzlt8wq2dtrCYNGUifRs0UIMYlsz5ZK4uni1okp%2BFUUiBb%2BU8HZoVch6WbRU0N9CnaYxAYA2IZGAcpuD43dxUoJZpSupRdoGH%2FMG4vjNAaq2P0iQq%2F6X7Zy66H83%2FEKfAV7tb3%2FtX%2Fn2X8rf%2BEjeyWXgASGNqRqk04TaZgmMugnKySH0KYzy7GZOI%2Fv8RjItVtaplU8TvqcqwgwReDpTX9yAzhw6LbdAVHOrIGKTpfhJdTI248gOur1XKi4bxFXsHcV3EPTM%3D&checksum=4008477438310b953cf066514ec9b09e3101e43fdf2d Edited January 27, 2020 by Achto
WHX?? 49,486 #4 Posted January 27, 2020 Here's another source Lane... Be advised theses are not locking cables and pretty sure the ones on fleabay aren't either. https://www.kaiserwillys.com/engraved-throttle-cable-assembly-in-black-fits-46-66-cj-2a-3a-3b-5.
dells68 7,498 #5 Posted January 28, 2020 @Achto and @WHX24 are both correct. I bought a set of the Jeep cables for my 701. They look great, but don’t lock. I use a short piece of fuel line that I split to hold the throttle open when I need it.
WHX?? 49,486 #6 Posted January 28, 2020 (edited) Which gets us back to an old question.... were orginals locking? I always used clothes pins clipped to the shifter shaft on a 401 with a B1290... one for slow... two for given it! Edited January 28, 2020 by WHX24
stevasaurus 22,911 #7 Posted January 28, 2020 the original throttle cable was locking and Joe's does lock...like the original. 1
CCW 1,300 #8 Posted January 28, 2020 This discussion set my mind in gear and caused me to inspect my choke cable. I knew it did not work smoothly. This afternoon I removed it and have been putting Liquid Wrench in the top of it and working on moving the cable. It already moves much better and I am sure by tomorrow it should be almost as good as new. Guess I will have to do the throttle cable next.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,133 #9 Posted January 29, 2020 Have often read where the locking feature fails but have never had one to see what they are like. Having replaced the pivot rivet with bolt and locknut on the lever style have often wondered if one of these could be added to the push-pull locking type. Keep the original push-pull in the dash and have it go to the lever control between the dash and the engine. Two cables in series with the lever adjustable pivot bolt providing the tension to hold the cable against governor pressure. Garry
WHX?? 49,486 #10 Posted January 29, 2020 That's not a bad idea Garry thanks. The lock feature often fails but I have found a shot of lube keeps them working. I use a product called tri-flow....much like a WD that dries but stiil leaves lube. This is on the late large style knobs. Be advised DO NOT use anti sieze on the length of the cable. I tried it once thinking it would keep the cable from rusting inside the sheath but you get it in the lock feature and it will not work. Looks like a call to Mr. Papke is in order ... I need to stay kinda orginal on this 702 I have in resto now. @CCW if you can cut the z bend off the end and pull the whole cable out. Clean it good and flush the sheath out with WD-40 followed by a flushing shot of brake/choke cleaner. Light coat of ordinary machine oil on the wire and in the sheath and a z bend pliers like new for another 50 years!

With the Liquid Wrench treatment the cable is working great. Now adding some oil to the sheathing to continue the lubrication. I can avoid the hassle of creating a new z bend. Will keep you suggestion in mind when I work on the throttle cable. Edited January 29, 2020 by CCW
WHX?? 49,486 #12 Posted January 29, 2020 Thanks CCW ...creating a new zbend is a cinch with one of these..... https://www.amazon.com/Hangar-9-HAN119-Z-Bender-Pliers/dp/B0006OBMJI/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1GQGSTA6Y2G73&keywords=z+bend+pliers&qid=1580263650&sprefix=Z+bend%2Caps%2C3156&sr=8-
stevasaurus 22,911 #13 Posted January 29, 2020 I just want to say...back in the old days, we were told to use graphite on cables like this. WD-40 is not a lubrication, it is a Water Displacement...40th try at the formula. The reason is...oil collects dirt and gets sticky. I might be in-correct in saying it is Joe Papke that has these cables...it might be Glen Pettit that has them. Sorry about that...I'm on this new diet, and things are starting to come back to me.
AMC RULES 37,141 #14 Posted January 29, 2020 And soon after that WD-40 application comes the rust... with a vengeance.
WHX?? 49,486 #15 Posted January 29, 2020 Agreed Craig … used WD on a table saw top once and rust got worse.
AMC RULES 37,141 #16 Posted January 29, 2020 Funny how many people think it's a lubricant.
