Razorback 1,035 #26 Posted January 28, 2020 Another thing..... are those older models like mine where the engine slides on the frame to put tension on the drive belt? Or does it use some other mechanism?

When I get a minute, I am going to look at my Speedex 1631 or maybe just a parts diagram to see if the belt guard is also a belt guide..... I think it is. Thanks @Razorback Any help with that belt guard/guide would be appreciated.

Not sure what I will do there You could make up one or two out of 1/8 inch wire that would go in the hole I circled and or maybe one at the lower front if there is one? I'm sure you're well aware of the function of the belt guard being its own guide. I struggled with this quite a lot on the mongrel 1267 that I was trying to build a while back. I changed the size of the engine pulley and I don't think it had the correct belt guard on it. Biggest issue as I see it on your machine is to stop the belt from sagging when you press the clutch. That will force the belt forward on the engine thereby letting it slip around the engine pulley.
Oldskool 6,643 #32 Posted January 28, 2020 @ebinmaine I have been trying to find a pic of the underside of the guard to see the guide. With the engine sliding to tighten the belt I think the guide on the engine has to be quite close to the belt

I've adapted a Briggs in its place and that was another one I had to make some concessions on, so to speak. The wire belt guides that are on the engine are... maybe 1/16" off the pulley? Oldskool 6,643 #34 Posted January 28, 2020 I am going to have to pay close attention to all those guides because the original engine would of had the pulley on the flywheel side. Which in turn with the newer engine it would turn reverse. So i have to run the belt with a twit in it

ebinmaine 67,420 #36 Posted January 28, 2020 That adds an interesting twist to the plot. See what I did there? O... man I'm funny. Yeah I know. Stick to my day job. okay so... Instead of making your belt guide so that it keeps the belt from sagging using long shelves or the bottom of the guide, perhaps you could use bolts or studs in the positions of the belt like maybe near where it crosses? you're going to want to have something in there to keep the belt from touching itself anyways. it's better for a belt to rub on smooth metal than another side of the same course belt.

This simplifies the belt guard a bit
Oldskool 6,643 #45 Posted January 28, 2020 Not much headway today. I did whip up some fenders for the heck of it. Also changed the belt guard a bit. Added some belt guides on the engine
