The 5 letter “S” word.... SCRAP

Recommended Posts

Pullstart

@bcgold @ohiofarmer any scrappers or just savers?  I have 5 vehicles at my place that need to go. I have limited time to haul them in.  How would you quickly maximize your scrap profits?

scrap the cats separate

scrap the batteries, if applicable

any other quick money makers?  Assuming the are loaded and scrap yard bound, what would you do if given 30 minutes for prep?

Kevin you have to CALL THE YARD where they're going..

I know we live quite a ways apart but over here in Maine if you don't have a battery or a catalytic converter they hardly give you anything at all for the car.

Call the yard.... Ask THEM what they want you to do... Or what way you make more money.

There are a couple scrap guys locally.  I’ve pulled batts and cats a plenty... but thanks for the tip!

I agree with Eric it's best to call the yard you're planning on going to before making any final decisions. Here in Oklahoma I always pull the batteries and cats before running them across the scale, but the yard I take them to pays a flat rate per ton for scrap cars no matter what is or isn't still on them. I then usually keep the batteries either for scrap later on or to use as cores when I need to buy a new one but don't have a core to exchange. The cats I usually sell to a friend of mine who does a lot more scrapping than I do...I dont get full price out of them, but it keeps me from having to store them until I get enough to make it worth my while to sell them

I also usually pull the aluminum wheels off if it has them, and keep them in a separate pile as well, it all depends on how much space you have to hang on to stuff and what your plans are. If you are just wanting to clean up your place it's probably better off not stockpiling a bunch of junk, but if you're like me and plan to continue scrapping as a way to make a little extra money then it's worth it to save some of the more valuable items for later

Right now, it’s to clean up my place.  These vehicles were my inlaw’s and he was always going to come get em...  yeah right, right?  I was subject to a home owner’s insurance sight inspection and shortly thereafter was given a notice of policy cancellation.  Eek!  The flare rate yard pays a bit more and is closer, then the yard that’ll pay for cats and batts will be visited after my last drop.  I thought about wheels, but don’t want the tires piling up.

curious as to why your homeowners insurance would get involved with 5 junk cars, usually it's the township zoning that has an issue.

I don’t understand... but in a way it’s blessing.  We’ve owned the house for over 3 years, plenty of time to move them... I even offered a couple times before.  It’ll all blow over... easy come, easy go.

The things people deem as scrap!

I told the yard dog “I’m not even a Ford guy but that hurts!”

he responded “yeah I know!  The tires are worth more than we paid for it!”

luckily they hey own a u-pick in Kalamazoo (@bds1984 that one with all the mowers and tractors) and this is headed there.

It’s 135/gross ton here, which is 2240 lbs I believe.

I have heard of this type of thing in our area also. Insurance companies are looking at "junk" in the yard as a liability of sorts. I've also heard of people getting dropped do to a questionable building such as a small utility shed that is in bad repair.

My agent looked at my herd of Horse's and asked which ones (a maximum of 2) were used to maintain the property. They would cover the two that I picked under home owners as long as they were on my property. The rest would have to be covered under separate policies, of which they did not offer. I had to pursue a different company that would cover the tractors that I take to shows, so that company now carries the coverage for all of my GT's.

In Texas you have to register as a Scrapper with the state.  It's part of their effort to reduce  copper and aluminum theft.  Most large industrial/utility size copper and aluminum have ID numbers laser engraved in them every few feet. .  Most yards will do it as you wait. Not sure what the laws are where your at.

It was being dropped off as I was pulling off the scales with my first load.  I have a few more to haul, tomorrow and Saturday.

Around here they take them as is across the scale...then they sort out the dead...

As I am sure you know, need to do the finger print routine now as well due to all the metal stripping theft during the recession...

For cats we have to wait for them to mil a check.. part of the anti theft laws.  No worries, I love mail days when I’m expecting a check!

I shortly thinkered about, still the import cost incl. tax will be not be the problem
but the Container overseas and also the rework for a local Roadaproval
and the following tax/year will be all in all that expensive on that Cars, that it blasts my hobby budget

... otherwise i could be really weak..

oh, Kathi, o there is no Bar arround, but look what i‘ve found.. 😂😂😂😂😂

what a luck that i have not much hairs..😎

Scrap is not worth hailing in around here.  I did a clean up last spring, it cost me money.  The bone yard just keeps getting bigger.

Here‘s the same.

as long as you put the items to scrapyard you go out for less, if they pickup you have to pay for.

best situation here is to spent them to local Firedepartments as Training Object.

they mostly glad to get free of charge items to trainee rescue and rescue tools.

So this items have a last sense

and who know‘s maybe they saved once our Live

Definitely pull the cats, hang onto them until the buyer shock has settled down.

I never got into scraping.  giving it away seemed alot easier for what you get out of it.

at our old place which was a group of homes along the main road we had contests over how long something would last by the road with the free sign on it.

the township has a free monthly dump day.  they collect scrap metal and use it to keep the program going.  makes sense to let them have it.

You seen my truck that came from a junk yard. Hard to believe what some people consider junk. Same with my neighborhood. I have dragged stuff to the curb and sometimes its gone before I make my way back to the house. This can lead to another topic... whats the best thing you ever picked off the curb or dumpster dove for?

So I hauled in the cats and batts today, the scrappers just in front of me dropped a load of stainless.  $14.84 deducted from my payout, I got these nifty exhaust stacks!  Rylee says I better save one for Screamin’ Jimmy.  Love that kid...
