Tractor boy 239 #1 Posted January 19, 2020 I changed jobs to over the week between Christmas and new years. The area i am moving my stuff into is about 12x14. I am a small engine assembler so i have a lift table and what not. Currently the area has nothing in it but my box, hoist and bench. 3 sides out of the 4 are open to air and the last side is solid concrete. I have quite a but of tools and hardware, i am looking for ideas to make the stuff i use the most easily accessible. So any ideas guys?
ebinmaine 67,266 #2 Posted January 19, 2020 Our basement workshop has an L shaped bench I built. Lots of pegboard on the walls. Can't have too much counter or shelf space.

Never used it before Quite fond of it. Yes. Just make sure you buy the better quality stuff. Quarter inch thick with quarter inch holes. Buy a variety of peg sizes and shapes four different types of tools. Need to change something? Don't like the way you hang something? Move the peg....
rmaynard 15,427 #6 Posted January 19, 2020 (edited) Shelving, shelving, shelving... You can have enough. While I am waiting for construction to begin on my new 18 x 20 pole shed/shop, I have half of my 24 x 24 garage filled with mostly stuff that will go into the new building. I built shelves along the sides (16" deep x 8' long x 8' tall), and shelves across the back that are 24" deep, and they are already filled. Already thinking that the new building should be twice as big. I can see where 12 x 14 is going to be a bit cramped. Here is one idea that I implemented for small parts and hardware storage. These parts drawers are joined back to back and sit on lazy susans. Twice the storage in half the space. Edited January 19, 2020 by rmaynard
stevasaurus 22,706 #7 Posted January 19, 2020 I would consider some shelving and containers on wheels so as to move stuff nearer the work area.

Never used it before It's not the clearest pic of the backwall non every organized looking at the time of the pic but hopefully you get the idea. It works well and helps conserve counterspace.
Stormin 9,981 #9 Posted January 19, 2020 Here's my rather untidy workshop. Power tools in cupboard under the bench. Most hand tools, spanners etc in mobile tool chest. To the right on the first picture, out of view, is another bench with shelf for storage of fluids and boxes of parts. Ex hospital bed acts as lift and a mobile bench. Don't forget something to sit on while having a brew. 6
pfrederi 17,663 #10 Posted January 19, 2020 Another vote for peg board. keeps your most used tools right above you at the workbench. no fumbling through tool box drawers. Also at the end of the day you can tell what tools you misplaced... 5
The Tuul Crib 7,336 #11 Posted January 19, 2020 Pegboard is good for somethings but I'm a big fan of OSB instead of drywall in the shop. You can put a screw just about anywhere on OSB but drywall you're limited to 16 inches apart. My pegboard is just a little bit on organized at the moment. Yikes!!

formariz 11,987 #17 Posted January 20, 2020 (edited) Here is my little tractor shop. Anything to do with tractors machinery and metal is strictly done here away from wood shop. It is 10x15. When not in use lift is just tilted sideways the way it is now because it is a real pain to always drive a tractor onto it. The next project here is to raise floor around it making it level so when not in use it is just one level surface. Table above snowblower is on hinges so it van quickly be out of way if needed. No wall space left so no hanging tools which I am not a fan of anyway. Lots of stuff in this little space including 2 42" decks about 20+ engines and 35 gallon compressor behind lift. Parts cleaner can be used where it is but it is on wheels so it can be used anywhere. Edited January 20, 2020 by formariz 1
rjg854 11,349 #18 Posted January 20, 2020 Sure looks like you were able to cram a lot of things in that space, well organized

953 nut 55,065 #20 Posted January 21, 2020 Here is my stable on THE day it was clean! I have added a few more shelves for parts trays since. Most ot my storage units are ones I picked up at auctions 30 to 40 years ago. The plywood roll out under the bench has cubbyholes for band saw, sawsall and drills etc.
Tractor boy 239 #21 Posted January 21, 2020 (edited) Well, took the morning off of wrenching yesterday. Ended up with the pictured. Got some stuff done this am and spent the afternoon attempting to plumb in a air reel. Two trips to true value, a couple of pvc parts later and........no air. Starting trouble shooting and found a leak. Have a doctors appointment in the am and then i will fix the leak. Mine doesn't look like that. Sand blaster looks new never used. Now i have to go clean mine up. Forgot how good it looked when I took it out of the box.
