Voltage Gauge test

Recommended Posts

cgambino1018

Found a Toro WH battery guage in the garage.   I noticed they go for a few bucks..  so I would like to test it before putting it up for sale.  I used my trickle charger to try to get the needle to move but got nothing to happen.

should i be using a battery to test?

which screw should the  power (+) be connected to?

which screw should the ground (-) be connected to?

All help is appreciated as obviously i dont know what i am doing :(

Cheers

Chris

Just wire it to a battery.  The trickle charger may not put out any charge if it doesn't sense a battery

And the G terminal should go to "-", and the I terminal to "+".  Just connect to a battery,  a lot of the new chargers need to see a battery to work.  Also would be a good idea to use a fused lead.

Most modern chargers are "smart" and won't send out unless they sense voltage in first.

Safety stuff.

Get another voltmeter or DVOM to use as a baseline.

G to - or ground clamp.

I to +

Check readings....

That center post is just for the light bulb if it was present.. Remove that red plastic cap on that stud and use a battery.

Click on the picture. The "S" had me stumped.

Center post is ground, I is for ignition or + power, S would be for the sensor if it were a fuel gauge, tach etc.

Ahh well.....

it's about the right size and shape for either a ping pong or tennis ball but I don't think it'll bounce right.
