diesel cowboy 263 #1 Posted January 17, 2020 Hi all, Last week my dad and I were helping a relative clean out the basement of his late fathers house and we came across 2 old empty Wolf's Head 5 gallon oil jugs and 2 boxes of Mobil 14.5 oz grease cartridges. One box of the grease is unopened and the other is missing 1 tube. We're looking to see what vintage they might be and if there's any interest for collectors. Both oil cans are in real nice shape for the most part. One has a small dent in the side near the bottom and one has an area where the printing has started to flake off in a few spots. Both have a sticker on the side that says Automatic Transmission Fluid Dexron II. One has the original cap over the pour spout and the other has the screw on flexible spout. They are both somewhat clean inside. It looks like there is some light surface rust and both have a layer of what looks like drain oil on the bottom paint flaking off The Mobil grease boxes are in what I would consider decent shape for however old they are. The open one looks like it had oil on it at some point in its life and the unopened one looks like it might've sat in a spot of oil once or one of the tubes inside may have leaked. I didn't open it to check. Both boxes have shelf wear on them. The 9 tubes in the open box all appear in nice shape without any dents like you sometimes see and the caps are made of metal and have Mobilgrease special stamped in them Right now we're looking to see what vintage they are and what kind of value they might have. I've already looked on ebay and the 5 gallon pails that have sold don't seem to follow any sort of logic that I understand for value and there's not much I could find for the grease tubes there so I'm kind of scratching my head on them. If I can come up with some kind of starting point for them and if there's any interest I'll make a classified add here for them. Thanks in advance, Stewart
ebinmaine 67,277 #2 Posted January 17, 2020 Those are some super cool containers. Really can't help you with the value very much other than suggesting more internet searching. There is an antiques dealer up here in Cornish Maine that seems to specialize in a lot of older automobilia. I have quite a few older cans and bottles of various automotive or shop chemicals. Just stuff I've picked up over the years or inherited from my maternal grandfather who apparently also had a liking for them. I don't know if it is contradictory to a collective mindset or not but I would be more prone to using that grease because it is great stuff... Then put the empties on the shelf to display. I'll be down in your area sometime in the next few weeks so I'd be curious to see what you end up doing with those....
