Kohler M20 charging system troubleshooting

Recommended Posts

Hughes Small Engine

I have a Kohler M20 I'm working on currently. It charges around 14v at full throttle but stays around 12.6v at idle and the battery light comes on at idle. I cannot find specs or troubleshooting steps for a Magnum engine anywhere. I have 12v at the middle terminal of the regulator and when engine is running full throttle I have 28v AC between the two outside terminals of the regulator connector. At idle this drops to around 13-15v AC. I'm just not sure if what the stator is putting out for AC voltage is correct and the regulator is bad or if it should be putting out more AC voltage at idle. If it turn the lights and accessories on at full throttle the battery light also comes on. My current guess is that it has a weak stator or the voltage regulator is junk. I've also heard the magnets like to come unglued from the flywheel and that throws off the charging system but I thought that was more of a problem on Command engines rather than Magnum engines. Anyone else have any insight?
