Pullstart 64,381 #326 Posted February 12, 2020 One roughed down... 3
Pullstart 64,381 #327 Posted February 14, 2020 One VW spindle machined. I drilled and tapped the end to have a bolt that holds the wheel onto the spindle. It beats tracking down special left and right hand threaded fine thread 18mm locking/clamping nuts. 2
Pullstart 64,381 #328 Posted February 14, 2020 Two down. I’ll clean up and cut down the Wheel Horse spindles next. 4
Pullstart 64,381 #329 Posted February 14, 2020 I measured within a few thousandths on my depth to the wheel bearing face. Close enough for the girl I go with! 6 1
Pullstart 64,381 #331 Posted February 15, 2020 Winter time preheat! It is 15 degrees with a 3 degree wind chill today. 2
wallfish 17,391 #332 Posted February 15, 2020 What about building a boxed type spindle. You can adjust the height so no more cutting/welding the frame and you can leave some room for a trust bearing on the bottom? 2 more cents Something like this?

Pullstart 64,381 #334 Posted February 15, 2020 It looks wider in the front, even from the back. It’s just that tubbed rearend look that is deceiving... The rear is currently about 2-3” wider and will be widened another 3” or so. 7
Pullstart 64,381 #335 Posted February 15, 2020 Well, if this doesn’t work I might be starting another chassis for this.I plan to make three cuts per rail to “Z” the frame. If all goes well, I’ll be able to fill the rear gap with the piece cut from the front. That’s probably a big IF.
Pullstart 64,381 #336 Posted February 15, 2020 Cuttin’ and stompin’... 3
Pullstart 64,381 #337 Posted February 15, 2020 If I tack this V in and duplicate the other side, I should be able to stack some wood under it and stomp the front back down where it should be.
Pullstart 64,381 #338 Posted February 15, 2020 The second V is cut out and the area is wire wheeled clean. The MIG is running low on 75/25 so I’ll roll the TIG up front next time I’m in the shop. G’night y’all. 7
953 nut 57,500 #339 Posted February 15, 2020 I would box the frame from front to rear, just a few added pounds of insurance. 1
19richie66 17,560 #340 Posted February 15, 2020 Whats a couple more pounds at this point?
Pullstart 64,381 #341 Posted February 15, 2020 I think I need the weight, especially up front! Not a bad idea Richard. 2

troutbum70 857 #343 Posted February 16, 2020 The old middle age spread eh.
Pullstart 64,381 #344 Posted February 16, 2020 It’s a great sunny day to make a frame look a little straighter than it was. 2

Pullstart 64,381 #346 Posted February 17, 2020 I took a few hours to go to the inlaw’s for the Daytona 500 but left after the food, the nap and the rain on lap 20 showing no sign of being dry for quite a while. We made a deal on a Jeep at least! One side is clamped in place and welded up a bit. I used piece of 1/4” scrap plate to fill the gap. It was a tight enough fit to prevent the welds from shrinking and bringing the nose down.
Pullstart 64,381 #347 Posted February 17, 2020 I ended up with the front section of the frame about 1/4” higher than at the transmission mount. That can be adjusted with air pressure. The chassis overall length ended up a tickle more than 67” and I was shooting for 65”. Once again, close enough for the girl I go with! Next, I should work on the steering arms, correcting Ackerman and building the front of the steering system. It’ll be nice to roll this thing around in the shop without fighting the front wheels flopping all over the place! 6
Pullstart 64,381 #348 Posted February 17, 2020 Wow. I tossed the WH steering together for grins and giggles. I’m not sure if I can do much better than what we’ve got here already! Before I proceed too much further, I’ll use a long skid to build a new lift table top. 5
ebinmaine 70,333 #349 Posted February 17, 2020 You may have to trim the front of your step or stirrup just a bit. Looks like a good angle, otherwise.

It clears on a level surface, I’ll articulate the axle and see if it even makes sense to keep it there. Maybe I’ll heat the rods and pull them back 30 degrees or so?
