7936144 inch 2 stage snowblower chain replacement

Recommended Posts

Denis L Goulet

hi,the chain on my snow blower broke apart, I got a new one on order, the problem is that on 1996 Toro wheel horse model 520h, 44 inch 2 stage blower model 79361 the chain is in the middle just in back of the shoot on snow blower, there is a 4 inch opening to install chain on sprocket and gear wheel, do I have to take everything apart or there is an easy way to do this, I see no adjustment on sprocket to take tension off the chain to put the chain on, I have never replaced the chain on this machine, I am sure somebody out there as done this before. Thanks.

There was a wood block on there that the chain ran across to tension as it wore you added more tension... The new block is now made of nylon/plastic... As for replacing the chain you do it all in the 4" slot.

Wrap the new chain around the sprockets with both ends of it on the top of the smaller gearbox sprocket, Then install the master link.

You may want to inspect the sprocket teeth on both and the alignment of them, the chain broke for a reason.

@Kurt-NEPA @lynnmor do you have any pictures of the chain/sprockets and tension block?

The bracket which the tensioner bolts to is  #33 in the illustration above.

You need to remove the top cover and it should be visible

It should be located under the sprockets. closer to the smaller one but really there isn't much space between the two sprockets.

Post a picture of your blower looking down at the sprockets and maybe we can point it out or notice if it's missing

hi, i looked again, I see the tensioner under the small sprocket, it was covered in oil and grease, the block is there, next step loosening the tension bracket.

I noticed that the sprockets are not perfectly in line, how do I fix that.

You will need to loosen the set screws in the sprockets with a long Allen wrench then either use a pry bar or hammer to move 1 or both to align an of course retighten the set screws (be aware these set screws could be doubled up one on top of the other as to not back so have to remove one then loosen the next and have thread locker or rust holding them very tight).

Depends how far off they are and maybe the cause. The frame can bend a little where the gearbox mounts which angles the sprocket a little. You can bend it back or use washers as spacers to realign it.

You can loosen and adjust the small sprocket on the gearbox shaft as suggested.

There's 2 bolts holding the tensioner bracket and the holes are slotted for adjustment

ok, its off by not much, I should be able to align them.

I ordered a new chain from partstree, will it come in 1 piece, or with a master link, what do you think.

ok,to make sure I don't screw it up......

the chain goes on the top sprocket, then on lower sprocket, then I adjust tension with the block so it just touches the chain, leaving about 1/2 inch play, am I right.

I see the diagram side ways, not from the front, its hard to see if chain goes under the block, logically it should not it will wear out the block. Right.

Sorry to be so late.  Here is a picture of the sprocket I added to the tensioning bracket.  Silver extension needed for the sprocket to clear the frame.  I had to alter the chain lenth.

That looks awesome.

Did you happen to document the dimensions of the silver bracket and also the sprocket.

I will be doing that to mine some day.

I know I took some dimensions, but I can't find them.  I don't remember them being critical.  Perhaps another picture will help.  I did make a shoulder bolt and spacer, but I don't think that is necessary.  A bolt and some washers would work.

Denis,

Resurrecting this thread as my chain just blew off when the wooden tensioner block split.  I will be ordering both parts but I was wondering if you (or any other reader of this thread) had a top down picture of the final installation which shows the location of the tensioner as against the chain and sprockets on the Model 79361 Snowblower. Also any tips on spacing for the tensioner would be helpful.

Any help appreciated as I almost finished cleaning up the latest big snow dump in Kettleby, Ontario before the chain snapped and now I have to get ready for the next one.

Thanks.

Follow-up to my last post a little whole ago. The chain part #117447 appears to be discontinued - at least at Parts Tree and Jacks. Any suggestions on where to find a replacement?  What is the length of the chain?  Is there a chain size / type which I can use to try and source?

#40 roller chain

Count the links of the old chain to match that # with the new chain. They come in 10 ft lengths so you will need to shorten it

https://www.surpluscenter.com/Power-Transmission/Roller-Chain-Links/Roller-Chain/?page_no=1&fq=ATR_PowerTransPitch:40&fq=ATR_Chain_Type:Standard

The tensioner goes on the bottom of the chain loop just to take up slack. Once you remove the bracket to install the new one, you will see where it goes

mechanic28, chain is probably #40 size , you can pick one up at tractor supply , also use a specific open chain / gear lubricant spray , to make it last . pete

Thank Wallfish and Peter for the chain size info. I placed an order for 10 ft and will place the order for the new plastic block itself tomorrow. However in the never ending saga of aging Toros, the bracket that holds the tension block (Part 117517) is also now discontinued and from my look inside the snowblower it would appear that the bracket holding the block fell out which led to the the chain tearing itself apart. I'll be going out in the morning to scour the snow drifts for the bracket but in the event it can't be found does anyone have the dimensions of the bracket so I can try and get one fabricated? Kurt-NEPA supplied some great photos of the red bracket in this thread but nothing indicating a scale so I can't quite reverse engineer from the photos. So close but yet so far. Any help would be most appreciated.

There is joy in Mudville. I located the missing bracket - it was buried underneath mud, snow and manure still attached to the frame. Now on to the repair. One last question. To access the bracket from above it looks like I need to remove the upper sprocket and I was wondering if there was any advice on re-attachment of the sprocket for alignment purposes (see photo). Thanks to all again.

I'm trusting my 70 year old memory about the work I did about 7 years ago.  To get the sprocket out of the way, I think you have to pull the gear box.  The Sprocket will come out with it.  But I seem to remember I could get at the bracket to get the carriage bolts in and to adjust the tension. It was a tight fit.  You need that sprocket back in place to adjust the tension anyway. Good luck getting the bracket back on and getting it adjusted

Pretty neat MOD if I do say so myself!   (DUKE APPROVED)!  :handgestures-thumbupright:   Ill have to lay my Rocks down for a minute and get out in the shop, Would like you to post dimensions if possible.   Thanks ~Duke   P.S. Just stopped by to catch up on some reading cause I threw a chain on the chucker yesterday now the chain seems too short????? All I  did was break a master link???? Hmmm maybe tensioner causing no slack in it??? Back to the drawing board!  :D
