fvantacich 3 #1 Posted January 2, 2020 1969 Raider 12, 6 spd transmission fluid replacement. When doing a drain and refill of a 1969 Raider 12, 5071 Manual Transmission, I first drained the trans completely. Then removed the plug on the right side of the trans, I believe this to be the fill to level. I poured fluid back in the trans, via the dipstick hole, till it started coming out of the side fill to hole. I checked the level of the fluid via the dipstick and don't see any fluid on the dipstick. Thank you in advance for any ones Help out there,
Lee1977 6,785 #2 Posted January 2, 2020 (edited) Wheel Horse 6 speed transmission hold 2 quarts 85w 90 gear oil. The side plug has to be in to hold 2 quarts. There should be a plug in the bottom to drain the old oil. If it has turned milkie brown it has water in the oil. To get all the old oilout you will have to jack up the front of the tractor as there is a ridge in the bottom where it's bolted together. Best way to refill the transmission is the dipstick hole and remove one bolt from the top of the transmission to let the air escape. fvantacich 3 #4 Posted January 2, 2020 Thank you Lee! I inherited this tractor from my grandfather in the 80's, plowed snow with it in Connecticut and NY. I have changed the fluid a few times but never went by the side plug till today but strictly by the dipstick. I have a few antique tractors and got used to filling their transmissions to the point of it coming out of the side hole. The old fluid looked like new even though it had been a few years since the last change. Thanks again for the quick response and thank you Ebinmaine for your conformation! Have a happy New Year.

953 nut 55,776 #6 Posted January 2, 2020 (edited) Great to see that your grandfather's tractor is staying in the family and being loved. In 1967 when the first six/eight speed transmissions were made the factory added a short pipe nipple and coupling to the side fill plug. The oil level needed to be increased for the high/low gears. Once a dipstick was added a couple years later the nipple and coupling went away. Use the dipstick as your measurement. fvantacich 3 #8 Posted January 3, 2020 Thank you everyone for your responses. Good info on Lucas I will keep that in mind also good to hear about why there was a need for more fluid due to Hi/Low gears. GREAT Discussion Board!!!!!
