BenHolcomb 332 #51 Posted January 5, 2020 The seat pan, hood, and belt cover will be the last items to be painted as they cover the most real estate and need to really pop. Theyll all get normal high build automotive primer followed by wet sanding with 600 grit prior to paint.

BenHolcomb 332 #53 Posted January 5, 2020 Now on a show car...this would get wet sanded with 2000 grit, buffed with a cutting compound, followed by polishing compounds then wax. For a mower that will get weekly use...it'll do. 3

ZXT 2,401 #55 Posted January 5, 2020 @BenHolcomb You aren't wasting any time on this! Looks like you'll have yourself a new tractor in a week or two!
BenHolcomb 332 #56 Posted January 5, 2020 That would be nice! The goal is to have it finished by spring, since the machine work stuff is out of my hands. The deck is another nut to crack. Been collecting parts for that but I'm starting to think I may be better off finding one with less rot.
Pullstart 62,787 #57 Posted January 5, 2020 What deck are you looking for? Maybe @Ed Kennell might have something?
The Tuul Crib 7,336 #58 Posted January 5, 2020 I have two decks that will need alittle repair but solid other wise.
BenHolcomb 332 #59 Posted January 5, 2020 Wonderful I'll keep that in mind! My deck is a RM-366. I'll put together a wish list as I get a bit further into the build. There are few items I'm hoping someone would be willing to part with for a fair price.
BenHolcomb 332 #60 Posted January 6, 2020 Little help needed fellas. What is the correct location and orientation for this pannel? A picture would be even better! I think it mounts at the back of the frame rails and the dash tower closing up the gap infront of the shifter lever but the mounting holes have me confused. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,032 #61 Posted January 6, 2020 Just in case you do not have it. Click on the picture Garry
BenHolcomb 332 #62 Posted January 6, 2020 Garry appreciate the effort, but this panel is not shown on the blown up parts schematic.
WHX?? 48,776 #63 Posted January 6, 2020 (edited) Sure looks like the filler panel that goes in the tunnel. It sets on the bottom with the 90 facing forward and up. Only one set of holes are used. I don't see it on the ipl either but goes right below the upper filler panel #10. The 90 is in front of the hood stand & should be holes in the frame for two 5/16 bolts. Sorry Ben don't have a pic. Pullstart 62,787 #66 Posted January 9, 2020 Hey Ben, here’s that plate for reference. Two 5/16” bolts, in the front two holes.
BenHolcomb 332 #67 Posted January 9, 2020 Appreciate your help! Not much progress lately. A bunch of small parts in the mail clutch spring, axle pin, new tie rods and lift cable from Lowell and lots of misc. items to paint. I noticed on the other gentleman's mechanical resto 856 he seems to have added the flanged bearing #6472 to the tie-rod side of the lower steering shaft. My old shaft was heavily worn in this location so that seems like a logical upgrade when the new one goes on. I recall the axle having quite a bit of for and aft slop as well, but I plan to shim that gap shut since the frame is already painted and I don't have access to a press. Creature comfort wise....for my upcoming birthday my dad gifted me a kerosene heater..busted knuckles wont hurt quite as bad while wrenching. Thanks Dad! 2

BenHolcomb 332 #69 Posted January 11, 2020 Picked up new the steering shaft, from the fabricator. Im peased with how this turned out...the damage? $42 with the collar, very fair in my opinion! I'll probably add a tack or two too the pinion for piece of mind. 3
BenHolcomb 332 #70 Posted April 16, 2020 Afternoon fellas, figured I'd give a bit of an update. Progress has been slow on the 856 as I've been waiting for the last running gear and steering tower pieces to be painted it didn't make sense to assemble any further. The machine shop completed the k181 refresh boring ten over, cutting the valve seats, installing a new valve guide, and hot tanking. This was followed by media blasting in preparation for paint. A local mechanic reassembled the block to 90% I've just got to bolt the external stuff on, carb, pulse pump, tins etc. Again that doesn't really make sense to do until it's painted as they're all in the way of a thorough respray. If anyone is interested in the price for these type of services after tax. Machine shop~ $160 Engine reassembly~ $170 (2hrs labor) Other costs were NOS EBay finds or vendors here. All in it was more than I anticipated, but I know it's done right, and with all NOS parts=peace of mind 4 8

Greentored 3,201 #72 Posted April 17, 2020 Man that looks great! Cutting and buffing it, then putting her to work? Man you're not messing around haha.

Yes this will be getting weekly use when it's finished, and hopefully will chug along another 50+ years. My juvenile goal is to show up the neighbors.. The guy up the hill from me has a Cub, and down the hill a Gravely. Both will secretly wish they were on a old horse when I light up my cigar. 5

That’s the key to good paint jobs! Prep, cleanliness, following instructions... and plenty of patience!
