ebinmaine 67,277 #1 Posted December 28, 2019 I have only one reasonably priced place I can get fasteners locally. They're often closed by the time I leave work. I'd like to set up an assortment in my own stock. Anyone bought a bolt kit online? I'm thinking of picking up a 2500+/ - piece kit of grade 8 fine thread. I'd use whatever out of it then refresh as needed. Any thoughts/comments/suggestions?
Sparky-(Admin) 21,305 #2 Posted December 28, 2019 The whole kit would be fine thread? No course thread? Seems like most of our Wheel Horses are course thread ( 1/4x20.....5/16x18...3/8x16...etc) 2
squonk 41,028 #3 Posted December 28, 2019 Any Fastenal's near you Eric? They could set you up with a bin too. How about a Napa. We used to be ale to get a free bin with the purchase of a bolt assortment.

Seems like most of our Wheel Horses are course thread ( 1/4x20.....3/8x16...etc) I may do one of each eventually. Fine thread holds more torque but maybe it isn't worth that much difference to have 2 different types. I have a decent amount of original Horse bolts already for the places where a bolt is put to a welded nut or for example into the transmission, which would be course thread. What we need are bolts/nuts that would go through and pinch 2 pieces together. @squonk I'll check on the Fastenal. Thanks for the reminder.. I do have several Napa stores and use them regularly. They're NOT AT ALL CHEAP and with the extreme lack of skill and drive they can be VERY challenging to deal with.
Pullstart 62,795 #5 Posted December 28, 2019 Do you have any farm stores... like Tractor Supply nearby? They sell bulk / by the pound where I’m from...

I do but they're both 15 - 20 minutes the wrong direction of travel. Pricing is good. Convenience, not so much. When headed that direction I do stop in... pfrederi 17,667 #10 Posted December 28, 2019 I have a good selection of Gr8 NF but they were accumulated to support my two military vehicles..Army liked to use NF. However I rarely use them anywhere else. Gr5 and GR8 NC are much more usable and a bit less expensive.

It would sure cut down in hunting for the exact bolt every time you need one heheheh, I spend more time looking for crap then building lol but up here we are so backwards, not only do we have to keep fine and coarse threads but metric and standard....and that goes for all wrenches and sockets too....sure adds a expence,
pfrederi 17,667 #13 Posted December 28, 2019 Avoiding metric is a big reason i do not work on newer stuff. In the picture above my entire metric Nut/bolt collection is in the bottom red drawer

SALTYWRIGHT 859 #15 Posted December 28, 2019 YOU DO NOT NEED GRADE 8 BOLTS. GRADE 5 ARE ALMOST THE SAME AND MUCH CHEAPER. I ALWAYS USE STAINLESS STEEL BOLTS AND NUTS BECAUSE WE HAVE THEM AT THE MARINA. AND THEY DO NOT COST ME ANYTHING. 2
JC 1965 1,530 #16 Posted December 29, 2019 I get mine from Tractor Supply by the pound. I have a pretty good supply. T.S. is the cheapest place i found near me.
MikMacMike 479 #17 Posted December 29, 2019 Ebinmaine, I been really working my tap n dies, I keep the wheel horse stuff separate so I dont know if there coarse or fine, the numbers have long since worn off, in any case I thought most of the WH bolts n such were coarse threads? Just thought id mention before you purchased in bulk, if you have a tap set may be double chk. Mike.

Turns out I changed my mind and ordered a course set for now.... Wew close call hehehehe, another thing I do is I normally buy a large number longer. That way I can cut them perfectly 1 or 2 threads longer especially if the bolt protudes through material to weathering. I so hate when they rust and or they snap because of rust if having to tremove them, I also use lock tight blue on just about everything except in the case of head bolts which are cridical. Not only does the bolt stay locked, the lock tight also seals it from moisture getting into the threads and rusting that way. At work if we leave more then 2 threads the inspectors always say, ok whos the shoe maker here, hehehehe it also just looks good n professional too. At the nuclear plant we get 1 warning and then yer written up.
WVHillbilly520H 10,373 #20 Posted December 29, 2019 (edited) Eric fine threads are also more susceptible to cross threading and damage than coarse threads... Being in the industrial/ machining occupations most of my working career other than some truly thrashed on parts (high compression high RPM or other extreme load situations) there really is no need for G8NF JMO. We have TSC local but the best farm store I've been in has to be RURAL KING bolts are color coded by Grade (3,5,8 etc) and also sold by the pound.
