ClassicTractorProfessor 5,314 #1 Posted December 24, 2019 Been a slow day at work today, so I have been on AutoTrader most of the day looking at new pickups. My old 94 F150 is a great little truck, and has served me quite well. But I really need to upgrade to a 3/4 ton long bed to haul my camper in. Found a nice looking 98 Chevy 2500 at Weatherford Auto Sales in Weatherford TX. Waiting on the salesman to get back with me and then talk to my banker. Is there any members in this area who could possibly swing by and take a look at this truck for me and make sure it has no major issues before I drive all the way down there. I would certainly appreciate it and make it worth your while if it results in a sale. Thanks in advance. https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=535432663&zip=73858&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fsearchresults.xhtml%3Fzip%3D73858%26sortBy%3Drelevance%26maxPrice%3D6000%26incremental%3Dall%26firstRecord%3D0%26marketExtension%3Doff%26modelCodeList%3DDODDW%2CRAM25002WD%2CRAM3502WD%2CCHEVCK%2CCHEVC25%2CCH3500PU%2CF250%2CF350%2CGMCC25PU%2CGMC3500PU%26makeCodeList%3DCHEV%2CDODGE%2CFORD%2CGMC%26searchRadius%3D300&numRecords=25&maxPrice=6000&firstRecord=0&modelCodeList=DODDW%2CRAM25002WD%2CRAM3502WD%2CCHEVCK%2CCHEVC25%2CCH3500PU%2CF250%2CF350%2CGMCC25PU%2CGMC3500PU&makeCodeList=CHEV%2CDODGE%2CFORD%2CGMC&searchRadius=300&clickType=spotlight

WHX?? 48,782 #3 Posted December 25, 2019 Seems like alot of miles Prof. Around here that would be a 1k truck but would also be rusted out. It's got the same 5.7 motor in my '95 with 145k on the clock. It runs fairly decent yet but leaks oil out of front crank seal and pan gasket real bad. Park it on gravel I be makin asphalt! Little shy on power when I hook up a decent size trailer. Then she ain't got the power to get out of her own way. Milage drops to 6-7 too. Hopefully XLT can check it out for you. ClassicTractorProfessor 5,314 #4 Posted December 25, 2019 I'm waiting to be able to talk to the salesman tomorrow...it's one of those buy here pay here dealerships so I'm sure his price of 5500 is if he finances it. As I will be going through my bank for the financing I'm sure his cash price will be lower

I sent an email through AutoTrader and got one back with the salesman's cell number and a note saying he would be in contact with me. That does seem like quite a bit of money for a truck with 250k on it, but it looks well maintained. I see that it says it has a 4L60E in it.. I would've thought a 3/4 ton would have had a 4L80E. 4L60's aren't the strongest transmissions in the world and the "sunshell" in them likes to go bad and make you lose reverse, 2nd and 4th gear, generally around 200k miles. Before I spent that much money on it, I would ask for proof of a transmission rebuild. If it is a 4L60E and it hasn't been rebuilt, you will probably be putting a transmission in it before long.
JCM 9,130 #8 Posted December 25, 2019 FYI In 1999 I purchased a new Chevy K- 2500 ext cab short bed 5.7 4x4 and those came standard with a 4L80E auto trans, this was called the Classic because it was a Model changeover year with the new 1999 had the 6.0 but you guys probably know that. I sold that to a friend of mine with 33000 miles on it and it now has around 175000 with original Trans and Motor. I have to say that is one of my all time favorite chevy trucks that I have had the privilege to own. Good Luck
Pullstart 62,795 #9 Posted December 25, 2019 That is a purty truck Bryce! I have a 2000 K3500 with the 5.7 and 4L80E regular cab long box and it’s tough as nails. It’s my back up plow truck and is full of mice... but something about that truck just makes me love it again every time I need it as a back up!
ClassicTractorProfessor 5,314 #10 Posted December 26, 2019 Yes it is Kevin, being a Ford guy I don't know why I kept going back to this one. If I could find a good deal on a 7.3 PowerStroke I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but the only Super Duty trucks I've found all had the 5.4 in them, and that's one Ford engine I never have cared for. Only thing I think would make this blue truck better is if it had the 454 under the hood instead of the 350, but a 350 should work just fine for what I pull these days

They come up pretty reasonable from time to time and have more power than both a 350 or a 454 and get mid teens for mileage. I'd suggest a Dodge V10 but I know you're a ford guy
ClassicTractorProfessor 5,314 #12 Posted December 26, 2019 I had an 01 2500HD with the 8.1 in it for a while...it had plenty of power but the best mileage I ever saw out of it was 11...course it was a wore out old farm truck with over 300k on it. I have considered buying one, but all I seem to be able to find are either 6.0 or Duramax. I could live with a 6.0 but never have liked the Duramax. Had some experience with the Ford V10, but never the Dodge. Only Dodge trucks I've owned were Cummins powered, things would run literally forever but I couldn't keep the truck under them, bodies and interiors just rattled apart

Only Dodge trucks I've owned were Cummins powered, things would run literally forever but I couldn't keep the truck under them, bodies and interiors just rattled apart I wouldn't count on getting much better than 11 with the current truck you're looking at. That's a lot of truck for a somewhat underpowered 350 to pull around. I believe they were around 250 HP and 330Tq that year? I've known a number of people with the Ford V10's, and they loved them aside from the fact that they like to shoot spark plugs out of the heads, which is remedied by installing helicoils . After that, they were fine. They also still produce the V10 to this day, which I think is cool. I've owned 2 Dodge V10 trucks, a 99 and a 95. I bought the 99 with 199k on the clock in 2015 from a wrecking yard. The engine didn't have compression on the #9 cylinder. Pulled the valve cover off and I couldn't see the rocker arms for the amount of oil gunk buildup. I wasn't sure if it had ever had an oil change so I decided just to find another engine. I drove up to Sapulpa, OK for an engine, put it in and never did anything to it again other than oil changes until I traded it for my Porsche 928 in June. Excellent truck. My 95 was my grandfathers truck, sold off around 2003 to a family friend, and then sold off again around 5 years ago (and was badly abused up until a year ago). I found it in January and put it back on the road, and it's without a doubt the best truck I've owned. It has 230k on it and nothing has ever been touched as far as drivetrain. I've heard of people up north talk about the bodies being bad on them, but I've never seen a rusty one before. The dashes were garbage of course.. but that only costs around $300 to fix. Sorry, I got off topic!
Pullstart 62,795 #14 Posted December 26, 2019 Depending on the gearing, I wouldn’t doubt that 350 too much. Mine pulls a 7.5’ back blade (boxed ends) and pushes a big 8’ Boss straight blade. It stays loaded with an old chimney’s worth of bricks in the bed and until recent years has always had a set of 235/85R16 skinny tires. It seems to have just as much get up and go as my 6.0 2500HD, when plowing. The 350 running from Nashville TN back to MI got about 10 mpg, running 80 mph... nothing to write home about. That was before I built it into a plow truck. Same as the 6.0 when unloaded, I’m happy to see anything over 10 with that which happens once in a bluuuuue moon.

With proper gearing, I wouldn't doubt for a second what it could do. I'm just figuring he's planning on running down the highway at 75 with a camper and possibly a trailer.. which you can't use 4L for My dad has a 83 3/4 ton 4 door long bed 454 automatic.. I believe it's around 215 HP and 300 Tq and gets around 7MPG empty. It's pathetic to say the least. Edited December 26, 2019 by ZXT
ClassicTractorProfessor 5,314 #16 Posted December 26, 2019 My camper I haul is an 87 Sunlite Eagle popup truck bed camper...it's light enough to haul in my F150 and the 351 handles it with no problems...biggest downfall of it is the fact that it is a short box truck...mainly want to go with a 3/4 as I do on occasion need to pull a load a bit heavier than my F150 wants. Mileage really isn't a problem, my daily work driver is a 96 Olds Cutlass that gets excellent mileage...and the girlfriend has her 06 Nissan Murano. We will probably also keep the F150, which gets 18 or so on the highway. The new truck will mostly just sit unless we go camping or to a tractor show or something
