Attactment compatibility

New to this forum. Loving it. Can any one tell me if attachments from a 1986 417-A will work an a 1989 416-8. Looking to get a package deal on a 417-A that comes with a plow,snowblower. Many thanks in advance.

Thank you, I have some recent pics of my 417-8 under the topic of Winter Trail Ride started by @Sparky  back in February of this year under Wheelhorse Tractors, That Model will do anything you ask of it.

I was thinking of keeping the 416-8. Better engine and I like the two speed transmission. We'll see.

Which is better for your application? This depends on what you want to do with it. 
For mowing and constant speed change and reverse work, nothing beats a hydro.

However in this case, a 417-A. Someone more enlightened can shed some light but I believe the suffix A means auto trans manual lift. This would be the Eaton 7 transmission and it is a generally weak unit.

Suffix H would mean auto drive and hydro lift. These units were much stronger. 

All that being said, the 416-8 is a gear drive with a 16hp kohler single, and that combination is tough as nails, just a little slower about doing it's thing.

All the 417-A’s I’ve seen are hydraulic lift, I have one too! My 416-H is hydraulic lift as well. My 314-A is manual lift. The 518-H was manual lift, so I don’t think A or the H had anything to do with the lifting but I do think I’m more confused about this now than I was before!!!!

Both 85 & 86  417-A  were built with Eaton 1100 Hydro Trans with Hydraulic lift. The 416-8 depending on the year could have either a Kohler or Onan. 1985,6,7 and 8 the 416's were Kohler and 1989,90,91,92,93,94,95,96 and 97 were Onans. Hope I got that one right.

  is absolutly right about the hydro being faster, in particulare where I noticed it had a seriouse advantage was if you are snow blowing and not turning around but backing up to take another swath, the speed also in very tight situations is like infinately variable too, I cant believe how slow you can go too, with out using any sort of clutch. I had no idea the eatons were weaker then the sunstrand....but that is very good info to know.....I used my sunstrand to pull 2800 lbs up to 4000 lbs cars around, although I did destroy the left rear axcel and hub, the key way blew a huge chunk right out. Its also good to know the 8 speeds are tough too, both sunstrand and the eight speed are on mine.

The Eaton 1100's are very durable - but the 700's might not be as durable 

 

don't know how the Eaton 1100 compares to the Sundstrand

Hmmm might be a good thing to research if someone was going to use the hydro for heavier pulling. I switch mine out to the 8 speed cuz I heard they were a little more bullit proof.  I sure hope the sunstrand is the stronger one hahahaha I sure put mine through beasty pulls.

I have several sunstrands and only 1 Eaton 1100.  I would never posit that one was "stronger" than the other..  The Eatons are newer so maybe less wear and tear....  I think either one will work your limiting factor is always traction next weak link is probably the hubs/ keyways or the differential.

agree - and can relate to tight situations and low speed 

 

 

with 416-H in some tight inclined areas it can be easier to navigate

 

and if you lose traction - can  then back off the lever just a tad to hold the tractor in place - and then can move forward slowly and power will then shift to both rear wheels 

 

( hydro linkage needs to be adjusted properly to do this 'gracefully' with no jerking )


 

not able to do this with my 312-8 ... for sure not nearly as easily
