If I remember correctly the best penetrating fluid found by anyone yet is a mix of ATF and (((maybe acetone??))) I haven’t tried it, but believe it. My auto shop teacher in high school taught us that ATF is the best fuel system cleaner, engine cleaner, pretty much anything. It is such a heavy detergent that is one reason why transmissions have such a high service interval. pfrederi 17,741 #157 Posted September 21, 2020 #52 and #55. You drive the roll pin 54 out through the holes in the housing 49. Pull the arm 53 off. Remove the 3 12pt head bolts #50 (you need a 1/4" 12 pt socket) housing will come off. Big square ring goes in the triangular plate. The short side on the one that was in the transmission and also the one I'm putting back in.... I had to wire brush and file that one some. The other side was great. I probably have 10 or 12 axles that were left over from the auction pile a few years ago. They all need new keyways but the ring grooves look good. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
ebinmaine 67,704 #163 Posted September 28, 2020 Yesterday I had mocked up the differential to make sure everything felt okay. Can't finish assembly until I get Loctite. I spent a few minutes tonight just cleaning up a couple things and removing the old park pawl. Tried out my new roll pin punch set. ebinmaine 67,704 #170 Posted October 3, 2020 (edited) Got the interior transmission parts including the screen all cleaned up and set aside. Scraped all the excess old gasket material off of the two case halves. I shined up the machined surface where the hydro pump bolts on with some sandpaper. I'm going to let the case halves sit in a soak of incredible pink degreaser for a little while. Maybe overnight. Not going for perfect because we are not painting it at this time but I'd like to have all the fins cleaned out and degreased. Just need to pop in the outer wheel seals and add hubs. Put in a new brake pawl shaft seal but I dented it slightly when installing it. Straightened it out. It'll either leak or not. ebinmaine 67,704 #175 Posted October 4, 2020 Here's a shot that shows the hubs as installed. If this was a regular hydro axle set the hubs would be basically touching the transmission housing. The way it sets it's just about two inches wider across the back than a comparable 8-speed. One of the hubs had two good set screws so I put two new set screws on the two axle keys and the two decent used set screws on the axles.
