I  suspect   you   are  correct ,  I  just    have  no  idea   what's  in  there  !  Time   to  refresh !  I do  use  140  GL  4  in  an  older   race   car  as  it  is   safe   for   bronze  and  brass  internal  parts , Modern  GL  5   not   so.  I  can  find  ( GL  4  )  basic  90 wt  at  NAPA . Sta Lube  makes  it.  Thanks   for  the   quick  reply ..  Rain  heading   your   way  soon ! quahog

I've got about 7 gallons of 900w Shell Steam oil.. can I use it?
HAHAH.
Model A's called for a 600wt, lot of guys just use STP stop knock as it's nearly the same thing.
As for a WH.. 90wt.

That said, what is this issue with the shifting rails? I saw it mentioned, but have never heard of the issue before. I'm about to do a change on my new Raider 10.
I noticed the 6 speed has an extension neck on the plug near the hitch. I'll have to get a photo.. should it be filled to the overflow of the actual housing, or to the top of said pipe?

The extension neck was installed so that oil level would sit higher in a 6 or 8 speed than it does in a 3 or 4 speed.

That said, the oil level actually sits just a bit higher than the top of the extension if you put the full two quarts in.

I remove the shifter to pour the oil in.

Tops, I'll see about that. Wasn't sure if it was some later modification or not.

The extension was to raise the oil level for the 10 pinion differentials. Chargers had the 10 pinion but a hydro carries oil almost to the top of the trans axle.

Just on a side note....

Is there such a thing as Too Much Oil in a manual transmission?

Interesting question...however 3 or 4 qts of GO90 might be a bit stiff for a manual.  The hydros were running ATF which is what about 20w???

Maybe thinner??

Never thought about it.....

How's your 40W engine oil compare to the 90W gear oil?

In early 60's trannies the shift rails were completely round. It was believed that once in gear shifting out of gear might be difficult or the possibility of grabbing two gears at once. because of the suction effect in the rail hole.

When they started recommending 80/90 instead of 40 is when the problem cropped up. 63/64 and anything later they started putting flats on the rails for a return path out of the back side of the rail. This is a '62 three speed set I put the flats on.

I have never been in the tranny of my L107  neither have I ever had a problem requiring prying the shift forks back into alignment...and i kinda doubt my father had any issue over the first 25 or so years.  And this horse has been used a lot. Wonder why they didn't stick with 40 w.

I've been using "00" for awhile now,  no issues and the transmissions are shifting easily. I had a noisy worn one in a workhorse 700, changed it out and put "00" in,  now quiet, I use it to pull a roller.   Wanted to get a used one at the big show,  itll have to wait until 2021.

I will add that in cold weather I imagine that it wouldn't like it very well but I dont use those ones in winter anyways. My snow pusher has 80w90 in it.

Considering the fact that so many of these transmissions have run for years on a milky mixture of water and oil they really aren't too particular as to what's in them. For me, as I've done for decades, it's 80w90 with 1 1/2 quarts in the 3 and 4 speeds and 2 quarts in the 6 and 8 speeds. Done deal. :)

These  diffs/  trans   do  not  really   run  hot, IMO. I sellected   Red  Line  MTL  as  it  was  on  my  shelf.  It  is  a  GL4  safe  for  bronze   brass  etc.   Since  I  have  never  opened  one  of  these   up,  I have no  idea  what  the material  make   up  is.    Thanks    for   all  the  imput ..  quahog

There is not any bronze or brass bushing in an two piece 4 speed or 8 speed; It's needle bearings, ball bearings and roller bearings.
