Stepney 2,325 #1 Posted December 17, 2019 Afternoon, all. It's been a long time since I owned a tractor with a gear driven deck. Have my eyes on this Commando and may be picking it up this weekend. Been staring at different photos for half an hour.. cant tell if this is a 36 or a 32" mower? Going by the distance from rear wheels to deck wheels I'm .. thinking 36? Doesn't have a tag and the fellow selling it has no idea.
WHNJ701 4,165 #2 Posted December 17, 2019 Looks nice and original, my guess
Lee1977 6,647 #3 Posted December 17, 2019 The tractor is 35" wide so it has to e a 36" deck.
305 380 #4 Posted December 17, 2019 from where i sit i'm seeing a 32" deck. i see a decal that says Commando 6...my 1968 Commando 6 with a 32" deck is 30" wide outside to outside of the rear tires. mine has turfs on it, your seams to have 6-12 ags which i think would be the same width. the relationship between the rear tires and deck wheels looks the same between the two tractors or, i could be all wrong
pfrederi 17,672 #5 Posted December 17, 2019 Based on pics of mine with 36 " deck i would say 36.
Stepney 2,325 #6 Posted December 17, 2019 I'm thinking 36" now too, going by the relation of the height bracket bolts to the gearbox covers. The 32 seems to be nearly inline and the 36 is offset. More interested in the deck then the whole machine frankly as it's a bit of a run. 32" would make more sense being a 6 horse though.. We'll see!
ri702bill 8,292 #7 Posted December 18, 2019 Nice looking original find. Having both a 32" and a 36", the one in your picture is a 36". If it were a 32", you probably would not like it since the tractor has the cambered spindles that gives it a tighter turning radius that pre 1963 tractors. I took my 32" off my 702 and put it on the 854 and since it would turn tighter, it left an uncut "mohawk" of grass in a 180 degree turn. The 36" is just wide enough to prevent that. Bill Interesting, never knew the spindles changed just because of the deck. On something of this era anyway. Edited December 18, 2019 by Stepney
ri702bill 8,292 #9 Posted December 18, 2019 No, that was not the reason I mentioned that. I do not believe the 2 are related. The pre 1963 tractors turn like a crewcab Silverado, the 1963 and later turn more like an S10.
stevasaurus 22,711 #10 Posted December 18, 2019 It's a 36" deck. The 6 hsp will do fine with it. The only reason to have a 32" deck is to fit through gates and those that have small yards...or if you want a few more minutes of seat time.

More so interested in the deck if it's a 36 just incase a roundhood ever comes along. I'm actually planning to mount my sickle bar onto this machine since it's a little easier to store then an Electro.
