Does it matter which order the two wires come from the stator go on the voltage regulator

Nope

They're AC.

I see that this Horse has had a yellow and red base at one point.  The blue was something special as a business/commercial paint or something?

No @pullstart i think a p.o. just got confused when they bought the paint haha but it actually doesnt look too bad on there

I have a 953 future project tractor painted Ford blue. I suspect it got traded to the local Ford tractor dealer who painted everything back in the day.

Yours also looks Ford tractor blue

Got some more progress done on the horse of a different color. I finished up the wiring just waiting on a new key switch and i cut, bent, and re-welded the engine mount on the belt gaurd to fit the kohler bolt pattern

@Gordyhogg here's my poor old Blue thing as I found it.  I still havent decided if its a restore project or a parts machine, but at least its now in a dry barn.

Well it was maiden voyage time today i put the deck back on it from the commando and took it out and actually mowed with it. It does smoke some but that was to be expected. This little horse ran great till i started noticing the mower belts slipping...turns out to be a pretty nasty oil leak from the motor and was getting on the belts. While it was running i could actually see it bubbling out of the oil pan gasket in 2nd pic. Also noticed it only likes to pop out of 3rd gear but will stay if you hold it there...any ideas on that? Anyway i had to finish the grass so i threw the deck back on the 312-8 and it mowed great!

Since you’ve got a leaky pan seal, I say pull the head to check the piston size, order up a new piston and rings along with a head and oil pan gasket and get her going good.  Not a hard job, just takes a little time.  Very nice tractor by the way!!!

If you're popping out of 3rd gear, you're going to have to open up the transmission to repair that.

That 3rd gear is replaceable.

Often caused by PO shifting on the fly or constant 3rd gear use just wore it out.

Definitely repairable but as stated above the trans will need to be opened up.

It'll be an easy fix for you folks.

I agree @rjg854 and @ebinmaine i guess the good news is im kinda well versed in these now since i just got done rebuilding the 8 speed in my 312-8! Other than it popping out this trans is waaay quieter than my commando too...the commando sounds like a 1920's 2 ton truck moaning and grinding when it moves. Thanks for the offer on the parts too @ebinmaine ill let ya know for surw once i tackle that part of this project...who knows since its already getting customized i could always just drop an 8 speed in it instead 😂

Yup.  Emory bought an 855 last summer that had a real smoking problem, but ran and started perfect.  New piston and rings and it’s good for a long time.  The bore wasn’t worn much at all, just the rings.  I’ve got a B80 that I work regularly that will have to have rings one day, but right now it doesn’t bother me too bad.  My 857 smokes for a few minutes until it warms up so I’m thinking the same thing.  Maybe they are such hard workers that they just have to sweat a little!:ROTF:

The third gear is a different size and

part number from 8 to 3 speed.
