Blue horse 656 repower

Recommended Posts

Gordyhogg

So this spring i picked up this 656 with what looks to be the original engine. Came with a decent deck and i put that on my commando 8. The old tecumseh had a broken rod so i put this one on the backburner. I recently picked up a k181s with a bendix style starter id like to put in its place. It looks like it will run but i may need a little help here...i believe this motor may have come from a c81, b80 or similar...it appears to be missing the coil bracket and everything that bolts to it like the solenoid. Also i will be needing a gas tank and straps like the one on my commando. I will need some help on the parts ill need and the wiring to make it work as well but i think thisll be a good horse for the wife...she loves it!

That's a crazy color for a horse but I like it. I'm glad to see you're bringing that thing back to life and putting it to use.

You may find the battery will not clear the starter motor.  Put it under the seat or think abut an ATV/Motorcycle battery,

Thanks @ebinmaine And thank you @pfrederi just found that out a little bit ago...i was thinking about one of those routes but id kinda like to keep the space under the seat free. I can see why nobody goes this route for a swap...i wonder how hard it would be to swap it to starter generator? I have a spare one laying around just no mounting brackets. The only other thing i can do is try to locate a rod for the tecumseh. Any ideas?

If you're really looking for originality you could find a rod.

I'd lean towards Paul's idea of a thinner battery and keep the Kohler.

@Gordyhogg I have a box full of NOS Tecumseh parts I picked up at the end of an estate sale.   I know there are several pistons and rods in it.   Send me the information off your motor and if you know the rod part number that would help me go through what I have..  I don't have any Tecumseh experience, so it may take a little collaborating to figure out what I have.

Here is a picture of the tag on the tecumseh. I agree though i would much rather have a kohler on it. Ideally i should find a starter/generator k181 like the one on my commando 8.

Yes Kohler are well known for quality....but if you look closely the techumse is very close in design.....they actually were a very good workhorse too. Id take a tecumse over any brigs or these chineesy cheasy things they have now, I used to have a Tec pump and it would run on every pull, it seemed to have good tork too when I had to pump long distance and quite a few feet of head. I remember mine having this ever so neet decal on it too with a indian chief....tecumse., I LOVE anything North American Made, Im even aproving some Mexican too now that china has so dominated or corperations have disowned us in favour of the cheap throw aways. Brutha you have TEC~Power under your hood, and Id say your right there with the KOL ~Power!

Heck yeah @MikMacMike the original engine has this sweet chrome louvered air cleaner if i could find a rod id consider putting it back on. The funny thing is i have another hh60 with the smaller crankshaft and i tore it apart in hopes to switch out the rods and the lower rod is a different size too! So im not sure what to do with it...kohlers probly gonna be my better bet

Oh dang, give that baby some luvin spit cuz I bet with all the K-pos out there youll be a rarity.....rarities stand out always. Besides look at her, shes red, she comes from the heart, and dag nabbit that motor looks sweet. Heheheh I forgot to mention earlier in this post.....Id not touch the flames colour or anything....in fact Id seal er in with a few coats of clear with the last coat acting like a patina window. Honestly what a sweet little pony. I have a charger 10 that came with a Tec Po and well a young guy up the road from me hunted me for 2 years untill I gave in....I sold it to him for his alawance basically.....this way he knew he worked for it and assured me he wouldnt just let it by the way side. I hate to see good stuff go to scrap.....like a grandfather whos become a hinderance cuz there no interest. Id rather given a spoon full of sugar and watch em come to life.....they all have the best stories and knoledge too, just like the Tec Po......it can put out just as much tork as any Koler on any day of the week as long as there matched cube for cube, and can be modified exactly like any other fire breathing pony. WEW listen to me, I better hit the sac, I been going since 4:30 am yesterday and I sound like an old warn out fart hahahahah, Night Gordyhogg my eyes are burnen. Think long n hard before you deside to un Tec your pony bro. Smiles.

That horse is looking mighty blue, I think he needs a hug.

Seriously, that thing has all kinds of character!  I bet that air cleaner could be made to fit a Kohler... if it’s a deal breaker.  Don’t get me wrong... I have two Tecky powered tractors in the fleet and one of them is my go-to worker... but I’m a bigger fan of the K mills than T mills!

I was doing some looking on wheel horse junkies on fb and theres a guy who built a 656 with the same kohler im dropping in mine and he said he used a motorcycle battery as @pfrederi had mentioned. I can work with that. Im watching ebay for the plate that i need that bolts on with the starter that holds the coil and solenoid or in his case, the volt regulator and solenoid

I don't have one of those plates I can sell you but I do have an 8 horse I could take measurements on. If you have access to a welder or can fabricate your own plate?

I was considering that too @ebinmaineif i cant get one on evilbay. all id have to do is get some thinner plate steel and drill my holes where i need to then weld nuts on the opposite side and bolt everything up. It would be a very simple job for my little harbor freight welder

You folks should check out Trina's 657.

She calls it her Pony Tracta.

Gordy, that could be good inspiration for you and your wife.

Horse of a different color... that’s got a better ring to it than “The little blue pill”!

I can see how you could easily cut a plate to fit and just nut and bolt it together.  I can’t see an envelope sized piece of flat stock going for much on eBay though...
