Mudrig150 298 #26 Posted December 16, 2019 If you still need to know... The butterfly screws are 3-48. If they're broken off, you can easily drill them out to 4-40. I used self tapping, Philips head 4-40 screws in my choke shaft that had 2 broken screws, and bumped both screw sizes up to 1/4" long. The throttle shaft threads got cleaned up and I put new flathead brass screws in. A little bit of threadlocker blue on them, and they are never coming out. I believe I used McMaster Carr 92453A092 for the 3-48 and 93878A106 for the 4-40 screws. 1 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Blue threadlocker will only provide a bit of resistance, I would peen the ends of the screws a bit to be sure that they stay put. Putting Berryman's up against Gunk is probably a tomato/ tomahhto. I think you'll find that they are very comparable to one another. Some people swear by 1.... Or the other. Biggest thing is to just try to be patient. Soak... Scrub... Repeat as necessary. The wire wheel I use is on a 6-inch bench grinder. I do believe the Berrymans has a bit more solvents to tackle the "varnish" in those most tiny passages again JMO, ... Have you ever tried a tumbler (like for gun ammo brass "reloading") to polish small parts like those carb pieces ground corn cob would be the media of choice and can be remove with a blast or 2 of compressed air... JCM 9,180 #33 Posted December 17, 2019 When I laid my eyes on that carb yesterday that @ebinmaine had cleaned up I couldn't believe my eyes and asked if that was a new one and can honestly say I have never seen a carb that old look that good. When that boy takes on a project he is super meticulous with his prep work. He definitely has a not so serious side to him and can be very comical for sure, but when he puts his mind to a project boy is he FOCUSED. He is a great guy ! We removed the throttle shafts from my old C160 carb and his C165 carb as well. Both were some floppy & both were broken at the top linkage. Here's a video I made awhile back that shows the carb I have. Jim's was not quite as bad but broken in the same place. We soldered the top joints back together. Cleaned his up some and pressed the 2 bushings in place on each carb. On his carb I used a dead blow hammer with a 1/4" pin through the carb body to hold the 1st bushing straight. Then press-fit the 2nd one on in with the vise. On my carb I just used the hammer for both. Each method worked out fine. We put the throttle shafts and plates back in with new 3-48 x 3/16" button head Allen screws. Added loctite for good measure. See the above video or the pic a few posts back for a "before"... Here is my C160 carb after cleaning. If you look carefully under the linkage you can see the spacers we installed. @WHX24 This method turned out to be FAR easier to do than we thought. I have 2 other carbs that I'll be repairing the same way. I now have another reason NOT to buy a Chinese clone cheap carb. Found this https://www.partstree.com/parts/kohler-a-236636 One of the replacements 4785331 is listed for a K321 and M14. It is listed in this manual which has left and right pages in book form. Then I started to question what motor I had.....even after I had cleaned and retorked the head back on....well off it came. I would not have been able to sleep if I didnt measure the cylinder bore to identify the motor......DAG NABBER I dont have a k301.....its a k321....what a bonus. It's my plow tractor and with winter still here I didn't want to mess with it. but I have another carb I think was originally on Skonk that will be going on the 953 so whilst waiting for the Super Bowl I decided to get it ready in case I needed to do a swap in the middle of a storm. (I did rebuild a Chevy Vega carb outside at night during a lake effect squall in my college days but that's another story) After soaking in Gunk, a session in the ultrasonic was completed and it was time for repair tool of choice the Dremel The hole in this carb isn't bad but enough to fix After dremeling ,another session in the ultra sonic I drive the bushings in with a 1/4" socket I use a dab of grease on the screwdriver and green sleeve and bearing retainer on the screws Ready for work.
