truckin88 104 #1 Posted April 23, 2009 Going to look at a gray workhorse, GT, whats the difference between that and a regular WH. I know they used Briggs. Are the engines bad, can they use all the same attachments???
Prater 76 #2 Posted April 23, 2009 My dad just picked up a GT1100, it had a Kohler engine and looks exactly like my 416-
hodge 6 #3 Posted April 23, 2009 It's my understanding that WH was making a line to sell through Lowes, and they were the Workhorse line. Briggs instead of Kohler, 4 pinion rears, and they came with the deck, instead of it being an option. Really no difference from a true red WH, other than the Briggs. I have a GT 1600, and it is stout. Some might not be as comfortable with the 4 pinion, but I have no problems with it. I am as confident in it as I am in my other horses. And, the Briggs has been fine. :omg:
hodge 6 #4 Posted April 23, 2009 An addition- there are horizontal shaft Workhorses, as well as vertical ones. Just like red WH's, the vertical shaft tractors aren't as strong as the horizontal.
kpinnc 13,743 #5 Posted April 23, 2009 Briggs instead of Kohler, 4 pinion rears, Almost correct- The tractors were basically the same as a 300 series Wheel Horse. The 8 speeds did in fact have 4 pinion differentials with 1 inch axles, but the 1800 series automatics had the same heavy transmissions that are on the high end Wheel Horse models. 1 and 1/8th axles, and 8 pinion differentials. And even if you're looking at the 8 speed, a 4 pinion differential is no weakling. They are much tougher than anything comparable on the market today. Nearly all of the WH transmissions before 1967 were 4 pinion setups, and many more were made right up into the 1990s on the 308, 310, and 312 models. hodge 6 #6 Posted April 24, 2009 "Almost correct"- the story of my life! Thanks- I knew that someone here would pipe up and add information. I forgot about the 1800 hydro's. I tend to think linear, and only had my 1600 in mind. :omg:

Other then color and a couple luxery things. The 1800 is the same as the 1848 its just about a 400-500 series combo type tractor.
hodge 6 #8 Posted April 24, 2009 I had read at some point, in a publication, that the Workhorse line was designed for sales through Lowes, but it didn't happen. That's why there is such a short run of them- only a couple of years.
bitten 134 #9 Posted April 25, 2009 I have been trying to figure out what the red hoods where all about. I was told that they were for sale at K-Mart, that Wheel Horse ran out of the black paint and that they were just a basic unit without a rear lift and a lift hight adjuster. Mine didnt come with the rear lift or hight adjuster but I have added both to mine and it was sold at our local Wheel Horse dealership. Dont even remember there being a Lowes in 85', at least in our neck of the woods. I have seen red hoods on the 400 series tractors as well. I can not speak on the Work Horse line as I know nothing about them. But would have to think that they are good garden tractors, hell they say Wheel Horse on them dont they. P.J. Operator 7 #10 Posted April 26, 2009 I was wondering too. about my "Horse of a different color". Nice tractor, other than the B&S engine. Randy
linen beige 14 #11 Posted April 26, 2009 My girls and I are kinda partial to my Work Horse. And what's this talk about grey hoods and Briggs engines? Oh!, The print may be small but... Why yes, it does say Wheel Horse on it!
