DBlackston 298 #1 Posted December 1, 2019 After my recent success with the 854 and the HY-3 install I have started playing around with my implements and have installed and olayed with/tested everything except for the deck and the front push blade. Basically all of them have some minor things that need fixed like tubes in tires, broken welds, and loose bolts. The one I really wanted to use though, was also the most daunting. The WT-244 tiller I bought. There was no telling how long this thing has set uncovered in the elements. Tonight I pulled it up to the house and pulled the spark plug out, plug was wet with water, tank also had water in it. I figured it was locked up but when I pulled the recoil it spun over, recoil wouldn't return though. A few minutes of tinkering and WD-40 I had the gas tank off and the recoil working good. A few more minutes and the help of the wife spraying gas in the carb and it ran for a few seconds. Very relieved it wasn't locked up and stuck! Should just need a good cleaning then reassembling. A couple questions though, and maybe you guys have some photos of what they should look like, or maybe have the parts! What type of air filter does this motor take? How was the throttle/governor originally set up? Id like to ditch the erector set style setup thats on there. I am also pretty sure that the motor is also rotated from its original position. Hopefully it has a square bolt pattern base and is easy to return to factory. I am really wanting to get the 704 back together with the 8 speed trans and try this thing out in the garden! 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Garry I did not see the serial tag yesterday when tinkering with it. I looked around onnit briefly at the safety tags and such. Tecumsehs usually arent too forgiving, theyll give up the ghost if pushed too hard. Thats a nice piece, I will be following your progress on this one. Wheel Horse or die ! -Brady. Guest 88vic #8 Posted December 1, 2019 There should be a governor plate I call it for lack of a better phrase, it attaches to the 2 empty holes you have there, it slides slightly to adjust high end speed. It has 2 small arms rivoted to that plate. One arm has a small rod and spring which attaches to your governor shaft on the side of motor, other small arm has a rod that attaches to one of the small holes on the throttle shaft. For that Ill need the engine number if you can find it, should be stamped on a metal tag or engraved into the engine shroud. Ill help as much as I can. DBlackston 298 #15 Posted December 2, 2019 Well while we had our last thanksgiving dinner yesterday I left the gas tank full with a cup of muriatic acid and the rest with water to sit. First couple rinses before the acid with Dawn and hot water came out super rusty with lots of scale. It cleaned it out pretty good. Going to try some BB's and sand when I get a chance. Tank looks like it will need a new lid, new fittings, and thanks to some pinholes I discovered yesterday some Red Kote. Never used the stuff but it looks easy enough. Figure I will do the 854 gas tank at the same time since it has a small leak as well. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
DBlackston 298 #16 Posted December 8, 2019 Well the more I clean the bigger the holes get. Since it no longer holds liquid I have it setting in a bucket of vinegar. Looks like the holes may end up being too big for redkote alone. May have to weld or solder them as well Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I'm no expert my any means but maybe the screen is an old piece of the screen that stuck up into the tank? I've seen springs in rubber hoses in the past when trying to create a bend without a kink..
