Leaf Pick Up!

Recommended Posts

Andy N.

Final leaf pick up of the year about to commence w/ Troy-Bilt Chipper/Vac and WH 312-8! I put the mulched up leaves on my garden to cover for the winter and then plow in the spring. Saves on $3 town yard waste bag pick up charge.

Troy-Bilt chipper vac works great, but with the amount of leaves I get in my yard, it takes quite a few times of emptying the bag.

Curious on what others use and how well it works.

I'm planning on using my no name 14 with a 42" RD deck ad a tow behind lawn sweeper.  Then we'll pile the leaves in the (dirt) road and burn them - along with all the other neighbors.

My leaves get chopped up with a C105 and then collected in my Craftsman GT’s triple bagger.

OOPS.  Unfortunate phrasing.  Though there is one neighbor...….

After spending yesterday afternoon running two tanks of gas through the backpack blower and 1/2 a tank through the handheld blower cleaning out the fence row and blowing leaves away from the buildings, I spent this afternoon running the RD deck and lawn sweeper to pick up the leaves around the house.  Worked well picking them up, but the chopped up leaves didn't burn as well and non mown leaves.  The leaves being damp didn't help the process.

Didn't get the lake property cleaned up, as it started raining.  That means more seat time another day :D

I just chop them into the grass.  The lawn gets greener every year. I use a leaf blower and tarp to collect leaves from the greener parts and mulch them in to the parts needing natural fertilizer.

Andy I am blessed with woods and bank behind and on the side of the house. I just blow everything over the bank. I have a walk behind for directional use. I use a back pack with a hand held at the same time. That is the secret to moving large amount of leaves . Amazing how much you can move like this. Very large piles.

I usually go around with my echo handheld blower (which I’ve had since 1985! And has just short of a billion hours on it) and clean around the house and the trees. Then I ride around and suck them up with my 416-H with 60” deck and Peco vacuum. Recently added a buddy seat so I can bring my little girl with me! She rides around with me and seems to love it.

Ohio Farmer - what kind of trees do you have?  Mine are mostly oaks, who's leaves don't break down quickly.  I hesitate to much these onto my lawn.

I too use the 42" RD Deck and a sweeper, but mine go into a compost pile. In the spring I will turn the pile over with the front end loader (I have a BUNCH of trees and leaves). Next fall I will move the partly composted leaves from this fall into a 4' X 4' bin (four pallets tied together) and let it work for a couple years. Been doing this for several years and the composted material is great for the garden.

I run a 42"SD on a GT-1848 with a (slightly modified) original WH leaf vac. I maintain several larger yards with it. Retrofitted an old Kawasaki power bagger unit to it, and run Gator blades on the deck. I'm planning to use a 48" deck next year, as the discharge chute is a bit larger. The 42" I built especially for leaf catching, has extra baffles added along the underside to increase vacuum. We get a lot of branches, and have lots of Oak leaves to deal with for about 3 months a year. It works well. Mulches the leaves nicely.
