I have shipped large items using LTL (less than truckload) independent contractors and had reasonably good results. Many of them will accumulate smaller loads until they have enough to make a trip worth their time. It may not get the job done quickly but it is a lot less expensive. I had a hood for a Lincoln shipped from Oregon to Florida and it took about two weeks but it arrived undamaged.
