Wheelhorse Wes 279 #1 Posted November 22, 2019 So.....my buddy Joe from Iowa (whose on here....Jennifer) sent me pictures of threads on red square about RJ transmission casting numbers. my 1960 suburbans have casting numbers G13-9 G17-9 my RJ is N17-8 so....according to the A-1(January) B-2(February) so does this RJ of mine mean February 17 1959???? Even though it is casted 8 according to the letter sequence would force it into a 1959 tractor....and on top of this the gentleman I bought this RJ from bought it from the original owner who told him he bought it brand new in 59.... WHX?? 49,170 #2 Posted November 22, 2019 This might be better in the tranmissions & axles section so I am sure when @stevasaurus sees it he will move it there and hopefully answer your question.

wallfish 17,080 #5 Posted November 22, 2019 45 minutes ago, Wheelhorse Wes said: N17-8 The theory is they didn't use the letter I because it could be confused with the number 1 but the N still puts it at 13. Not sure now if there's a B to be confused with 8 but hopefully someone knows It's possible to buy a tractor built in late 58 in 59. It's possible the casting made in late 58 would go on a tractor built in 59. Either 58 or 59 they are all badged RJ-58 and all are the same tractor with a few very minor exceptions like the solid seat pan and some had a 1960 height adjuster added to the lift lever.
Wheelhorse Wes 279 #6 Posted November 22, 2019 This is going to restored as a 59’ I’m going to believe the gentleman I bought it from who bought it from the original owner.....I was just confused about the first letter as the N....the numbers on the transmission are clear I can read them fine. Thanks for everyone help..WES
buckrancher 2,694 #7 Posted November 22, 2019 The cast numbers and letters are a casting date from the foundry they have nothing to do with when the tractor was sold the po could have purchased the tractor in 59 that does not mean it's a 59 could be a leftover from 58 brian
stevasaurus 22,868 #8 Posted November 22, 2019 @buckrancher @wallfish after giving this some thought about the "N", is it possible that they also did not use "L"??? That would make the "N" December.
Lane Ranger 10,992 #9 Posted November 22, 2019 (edited) Not sure what each of the 12 month codes are for the RJ and Suburban three piece transmission’s are but I took pics of four I have here. Like Steve days ( who has seen a few of the also) the center piece of the three piece had a code placed on it when it was cast at the factory. I have an early 1958 with No Code , a 1959, a 1960 and another 1959. Steve and I decided to use a good 1960 center on a 1958 RJ transmission rebuild ( See Steve’s. : So You Want to Redo a Three Piece Transmission post) of a couple years ago. Note the % mark on the 1960 case - no telling what that was about. Edited November 22, 2019 by Lane Ranger

Wheelhorse Wes 279 #11 Posted November 22, 2019 Thanks everyone for the information on the transmission casting numbers. So between you me and Santa Claus it’s not going to matter if I restore this tractor as a 1959 then. Thanks everybody. Wes thumbs up

By the way it looks like an 8 LoL

stevasaurus 22,868 #14 Posted November 23, 2019 You may be safe to assume that N (December) 17th 1958 transmission ended up on a RJ that was put together in 1959, but you would be positive if that last number was a 9 and it was the original transmission.
