WVHillbilly520H 10,374 #26 Posted November 9, 2019 There's a reason that across ALL brands that the top/best garden tractors were hydrostatic drive with hydraulic lift and not the gear drive units just saying... I grew up on gear drive Cub Cadets but as far as GTs for snow work I'll never use anything but a hydro...
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #27 Posted November 9, 2019 Half the corrosion problem is the high density of the fluids used. The higher the density the more ability the fluid has to retain heat or lack of heat. Have seen loaded wheels sitting in a pool of water at the end of June because the fluid has not warmed up and humidity is condensing on the cold steel wheel. The difference today is the new hydros (TuffTorq) are iffy at best vs the older Sunstrands and Eatons and most of the new SCUT/CUT (small 4x4 tractors) are offered hydro only but I do have 2 an older Kioti CK20 and a newer Mahindra eMax 22 that are both gear drive (but those are a whole different beast with power steering rear 3pt FEL and shaft driven implements) again I believe a garden tractor WH CC JD ect should be hydrostatic.

Yes! My 73 14 kohler/ Eaton hydro are only 46 years old!!👍😄🇺🇸 Those tuff torqs are junk.... you don’t see any 1996 ( pick a year!) craftsmen, mtd or Troy bilt tractors; because the transaxles are junk either that or the motors have taken their last breath!! What did the old CC have for transmissions? @WVHillbilly520H
ebinmaine 68,355 #31 Posted November 10, 2019 @AHS I remember hearing that they had a slightly different version of the Sundstrand that Wheelhorse was using back then.

I’m not sure whether my 73 has an Eaton or a sundstrand. It has a big filter on the right hand side and it works.. my buddy’s at the Bradstreet (the old wheel horse dealer) said it had an Eaton by the sounds of it. edgro 677 #34 Posted November 10, 2019 Hydro with foot control works much better for me. It's faster, and your arms still function after a long day of snow "rearranging"

If the hydro filter sticks out the right side it is a Sunstrand. As a 73 I would guess it is a piston to piston Sunstrand not a hydro gear. Filter on the left rear is Eaton.
