What would it take to change an auto trans to 8 speed?

Recommended Posts

Ok, it’s a C160. I know 8 speeds, they have 4 bolt that mount them to the tractor.. simple, and heavy! I am clueless about automatics. To change it; Is it just the 8 speed and a shifter plate? I am looking for something for snow blowing.

There's several sheet metal differences.

I'll bet I could find some here.....

:D

Control linkage issues but nothing insurmountable.

What is wrong with your hydro???

@ebinmaine there is just sunstrand and Eaton (hydro) and 8 speed in wheel horse, right? There is no auto?

A hydro and auto are one in the same.

What's wrong with yours that makes you want to swap it out?

I would much prefer the hydro over the 8 speed for snow work.

Really? Why? Just curious. I have both the hydro and the 8 speed... and I have only driven the 8 speed in the snow. I would think the hydro in the snow would jut spin...

I'll share what I do to cinnamon on Sunday.

It's all about being properly weighted.

Some like hydros for speed and convenience.

Trina and I both prefer a gear drive.

They are generally preferred in the snow due to the fact that you can vary your speed almost indefinitely - you essentially have an unlimited number of "gears". There is no slipping the clutch or having to adjust the engine RPM to achieve your desired speed.

They'll both spin - the transmission type has nothing to do with the traction of the machine. That's like saying you wouldn't drive a car with an automatic in the snow because it would just spin.

If you have to do a lot forward and reverse work, there's no need for all the clutching and shifting.

Rimguard

If you can get it... That would be ideal.

Heavier than any other filling fluid except calcium chloride.

That's what is in Cinnamon Horse's tires all around.

There's 255 POUNDS of fluid.

Then another 100 steel.

Auto lift is the most important thing to me when it comes to snow blowing. I still have good upper body strength, but the one season I used a Manual lift I had tennis elbow bad.

Calcium chloride, doesn’t that have rusting capability’s? Rimguard does not? @ebinmaine

It is. Yes.

It shouldn't be in contact with bare metal.

If in a tube it's much less of a problem unless a leak occurs.

Calcium chloride can weigh as much as 13.5 pounds per gallon.

That's what I'll likely use to fill the tires of Colossus when I get it going.
