Pullstart 62,900 #26 Posted November 18, 2019 I picked up a new starter solenoid the other day and got that installed. The fuel pump won’t pick up gas out of a cup, so I ordered an electric $9.84 Amazon special. I put one on the wood splitter and seems to be working just fine on that. The stock muffler location wouldn’t allow the new hood’s figment, so it’s hangin’ out there for the time being. Depending on what I end up doing with this, I might run some straight pipes out the back. I’ve also proven the hood bushings don’t hold up... one already shattered. I’ll duplicate them using a bit more robust material.
Pullstart 62,900 #27 Posted November 20, 2019 I popped the electric fuel pump on today, along with a new filter and new line. I powered the pump via the coil wire and snapped the stud off the coil. I have an external regulated coil and put that one in for the time being. I’ve given it a few blow (gun) jobs and every time I crank it over more crap flies out from the tins! Well, the fuel tank rubber is leaking. Anyone surprised? Otherwise, it fired up on it’s own, NO STARTING FLUID REQUIRED!

You should pick up a ballast resistor (less than $10 at any auto parts store) then you could continue to run your coil. if you do not use the resister you will burn your points. Pullstart 62,900 #29 Posted November 21, 2019 After some failed attempts at bushing making, I finally spun some out of 5/8” ready rod. They’re long, but will be inserted from the outside and pinned in place through the 3/8 shaft.
Pullstart 62,900 #31 Posted November 21, 2019 The difference a little elbow grease and some 180 grit will do! I’m not sure how the paw prints lasted so long in the paint either...
Pullstart 62,900 #32 Posted November 21, 2019 That looks a bit better.... for now.
Pullstart 62,900 #33 Posted November 21, 2019 Yes, Chief will have a war cry, heard for miles! It’s not dual pipes out the back, I just wasn’t feeling it for this one.
Pullstart 62,900 #34 Posted November 21, 2019 I just pulled the deck and mule drive out of the way and found this. I wonder if there’s a float INSIDE the carb? This one is waterlogged.
Pullstart 62,900 #35 Posted November 21, 2019 I’m glad to see a float in there, but there was pond scum looking mess everywhere. I adjusted the float level too, it was quite high. 1
Mikey the Monkey 697 #36 Posted November 21, 2019 really diggin the look of that hood on there with the dolly parton headlights. the paw prints are a good fit for chief. like an old tatoo thats faded through the blood of a thousand battles

The 180 grit would probably be a bit much, but it was a worn piece.
Pullstart 62,900 #40 Posted November 21, 2019 All you naysayers of the cheap Amazon fuel pumps, keep on saying nay! After about 5 minutes of filtered run time, it’s dead. The pulsating mechanism already had a heart attack. There’s a replace, ent on the way and they want the dead one back. Since we’re talking fuel and USPS, I cling wrapped the crap out of it and used the vacuum packer to seal it from air as well before shipping it out.
PeacemakerJack 10,738 #41 Posted November 21, 2019 Ouch Kevin...hard to imagine how quickly that thing failed. One would think that it would at least last long enough to use it for the tractor for some sort of job, then when it was as far away from the shop as possible, the pump would die—leaving you stranded. That is typically Murphy’s Law At least this way, it never left the shop...
Pullstart 62,900 #42 Posted November 21, 2019 I REALLY needed it too! What for? Because... well... because!
Pullstart 62,900 #43 Posted November 23, 2019 I’ve got more work to do, but it does run! I had some backfiring out the carb, so I’ll play with timing a bit... then attack a possible valve issue. 1
Pullstart 62,900 #44 Posted April 17, 2020 Chief came out of winter storage today. He ran for a minute or less. The spark is weak and the coil is an externally regulated unit. I have just one internally regulated coil but the positive stud is snapped off. I’ll try to soldier a lug onto it for a small wire jumper.
pfrederi 17,739 #45 Posted April 17, 2020 When you say regulated do you mean resisted?? If the coil needs a ballast resistor but doesn't have one you will have a strong spark but burn the points quickly...

I noticed yesterday that Jada’s 857 has an externally resisted as well and that thing burns points like crazy! Now I understand why... thanks Paul!
Pullstart 62,900 #48 Posted April 18, 2020 I got Chief fired up for the show last night, flames roaring out the pipe and all. That thing barks so loud... I’ll only use it for short times, with hearing protection! 2
ZXT 2,401 #50 Posted April 19, 2020 Wonder why they had the Nelson muffler pointing out the way it was? It should've pointed down and exited the exhaust out the drivers side. Regardless, the straight pipe puts off a nice light show!
