My C-160 Auto

@Herder here you go.  I do recall, it was advertised as $150 and he gave me $50 back after we shook hands on the deal.  There are some loose tins, but it’s all there.  The hood is quite tweaked, but I have two others from C-101’s to choose from.  The hour meter says 1283 and I believe it....  At least they weren’t afraid to grease it!

Nice score.The C series were tough tractors.The only thing that killed mine was an engine fire.The engine lives on in the c101.It looks like you are getting quite a collection.

There’s a few around here...  It’s my only C series hydro, but I don’t imagine it’s too different than the 60’s models we’ve accumulated.

 

I’m focused mainly on organizing in the barn for now to make room to stuff a few vehicles inside for the winter.  The racking is making a huge difference!

Jeez dude,what a pile.I like it.Go verticle! What is that on the upper right? Turbine wheel.Very 70's.I got a set with 36's that came on a 78 Bronc.

If you get a chance could you check the numbers on your VIN plate?

I think I see model 1-0480-9 and serial 1022193.

 

This service bulletin comes up if I read the serial correctly

I’ve been trying to organize the barn a bit lately.  What’s the point of having a 16’ sidewall and using only 3’ of space right?  Those wheels and tires on the buggy were my “road tires” but after sitting a year, the tires are pretty dry rotted and flat spotted.  I’m not sure if they’ll see road speeds again, if I ever fix the buggy.  I hurt the engine last fall and haven’t been into it yet.

The model number sure is buggered up.  I think I see 1022183 for the serial number.  Is that one digit the same bulletin?  Maybe if I rub a paint marker on the number plate and wipe it off a bit the model number might pop.  What do you say?

That has to be the first C160 auto I have seen with a manual lift.  Good luck with the organizing!  I find that every time I organize my garage I: 1) run into projects that I forgot about; 2) find tools I forgot I had; 3) Duplicates of tools; or 4) I find that I need to fill the newly found space with something else!

That's different! I thought all the C160 Autos had hydraulic lift.

Well, we learn something new every day, huh?  I had forgotten if it was manual or hydro lift, until I grabbed it down for more investigation last night.

I have been working quite hard organizing the storage building, but tonight I took a few minutes and pulled the C-160 from the rack.  After a quick look over I discovered the fuel line was cut.  I pulled the belt off the transmission, I’d like to get it running before spinning the trans.  It’s a bit low on oil and the trans looks full and bright red, but everything will get a fresh fluid change if all checks out.  The battery is completely dead, so I’ll try to charge it but won’t be surprised if it needs to be replaced.  I popped another one in, found the solenoid clicking but not engaging the starter.  I removed the starter wire and jumped the terminals together and it rolled over!  A quick shot of starting fluid and it roared to life!  So far, it needs a fuel line and filter and starter solenoid, assuming it won’t bench test with jumpers either.

 

This leads me to my next tough subject...  The ceremonial naming!

 

It’s a C-160.  It’s the biggest one-lunger Kohler in a Wheel Horse.  It’s superior and the largest engine in my fleet.

 

It’s....  CHIEF!

Yes same service bulletin for serials 1022171 thru 1022208.

That is a cool 160 Kevin—have fun working on a name.  There are LOTS of cool options from the western films.  “Chief” is a cool name for sure...

I fiddled around with the wood splitter today and recalled the recent replacement of the starter solenoid prior to switching over to the Predator engine.  I’ll stick it on Chief.  

 

Take a a look at the patina on the fender pan, looks like a yellow primer wearing through!  If anything, this’ll eventually get the wet sand treatment, no repainting for this monster.  @12Horse Paladin Here is a picture of my engine tins for reference too.

The solenoid was a flop... so I figured I’d look for a hood.  I really like this 1277 hood and happen to have the front bracket I cut off Frank.  I believe with some trimming and some welding.... well... you know.

A little nip/tuck body modification is in order to mount the old square hood.  I trimmed a bit off the old Charger 12 hood bracket and everything looks pretty decent.  I’ll probably spin some hood bushings and drill out the wallered out holes before cleaning the area for some welds.

I’ve never spun a plastic bushing.  I have these plastic/resin something or another bars and thought they might work.  I started by roughing a block, then free handing a 3/8” hole through it.  I ran some threaded rod through and started up the lathe.
