Do your tractors have names?

Recommended Posts

Mudrig150

Are enough of a wierdo to name your tractors? I know I am :D.

I have One-eyed Larry, my one-headlight JD 140. I just kind of came up with the name, mainly because Larry seems like a name for many older guys, and it fits better than really any other name.

I also have Monty, my Burns B-60.

Do your tractors have names? If so, let's hear them, and the story behind the name!

IMG_1411.JPG.7ab7d6025a52908809a7ebeb1c98d6c5.JPGWelcome to the club of weirdos, most of mine do have a name.  It makes referencing them easer.  They may be named after a previous owner, location or just simply based on personality.  At the end of the day it's a lot of names to remember.   This one here is Whiny.  The PO was always whining about something, and still is.

Pullstart

Nope, don’t name mine.  Well, except a few.  Most all of them.

Putt Putt, my beloved 502.  I’m not sure how we came up with the name, but it fits.

  51A62D5F-9560-4978-84C2-34B5B2EDF5E2.jpeg.e81d17158d950c66106fd1044fbc08c4.jpeg

Then came along Rylee’s tractor, Screamin’ Jimmy.  If you’ve ever seen or heard of a Detroit Diesel, you’ll know the term.  That Commando 800 had a slight governor adjustment issue and it would fly off the handle right quick.  It’s also got a tuff additude.  Rylee says “Jada’s tractor is all nice and pretty, mine’s screaming GET OUT OF THE WAY!”  The rear wheels I believe were mounted backwards when I picked it up from @12 hp Kohler Robbie.  We spun them around and added C-101 front spindles to widen it up a bit.  We wanted to put a more square nosed hood on it, then Rylee found the blue flames and skulls hood and knew that was the one.

Next, “The polished Turd” my 656.  I asked @stevebo to show me how to wet sand and buff old sheet metal.  When we were done, I said something along the lines of “You really can polish a turd,” and it stuck.  Now if you could only find the diamond in the rough on the operator...

Also scored at the big show of 2018, “Barney Fife” Jada’s 857.  It was coined a “barn find” and I picked it up for a hundred bucks.  Other than a battery and a set of points, I don’t think I’ve ever done anything to it.  Maybe oil changes and fuel lines out of habit, but no work was needed to fire it up! I do recall giving it some love with WD-40 and some fine paper, but it was to see what it does compared to soapy water.  It’s on the right side of the picture, this was one of the first days they were both running last year.  I love the smiles on those kids’ faces!

Then there’s “Big Junky” the 10 horse 1276.  It is big, strong and runs like a top, but everything is cobbled and worn out.

C7B16C82-F4B8-4EB3-8861-0888280CFD30.jpeg.131a2a223f3c80317d52decd90944faf.jpeg

To stay true to his name, we put the original painted up ugly lights hood back on him.

There’s the 552 kind of roller big project that came with a snowblower Tecumseh engine not bolted down and a locked up transmission.  It had a cool 1” black pipe stack in the for sale ad, but was MIA when we got there to pick it up, but it was dubbed “Poppy” because I can already hear it being all loud and obnoxious... but cute in the same way.

We grabbed this Commando 6 for a song, I think 80 bucks and a couple hours driving each way.  It received a worn out Kohler carb and runs great now.  It never had a name until I left Mrs. @pullstart at camp with @WHX24 and @Rp.wh in Portage and somehow they figured it was just too plain Jane.  Here is “Jane.”

I can’t ever, ever forget “Frank!”  The girls and I decided we should make Mommy a tractor that looks like Putt Putt but is bigger, stronger and faster.  We mixed up a Charger 12 chassis, 10 horse Kohler out of a C-101, lots of work, custom parts, modifications and plenty of blood and sweat, then topped it off with 753 skins and a whole bunch of clear coat.

Hot Wheels was picked up from Richard, @953 nut at this year’s big show.  It’s a 953 show cruiser that he built a few years back.  It’s got awesome flames and a big Harley Davidson chrome stack muffler.  We’ve had 3-4 year olds drive it, all the way up to 6’4” friends.  I’m amazed how easy it is for big and small to operate safely.  The little guy was in low range and I walked with him to coach his steering and run the clutch.

Don’t let all the cool and shiney fool you though, Hot Wheels is a tough worker too!

What’s left?  At the J&C Plow Day @stevasaurus reminded me how he disagrees with tractor names.  They have model numbers.  That’s their name.

Well this C-81 needed a name.  It was dubbed “Steve” for obvious reasons!  Because it doesn’t have socks on of course!

The other day we through hard work and thought came up with Filly for Rylee’s 1076.  She bought it herself this spring and it’s a good running tractor!

Some of mine are "Baltimore Bob", "Rock Chucker", "Barry", of course I think most wheel horse guys have a "red" or "old red", "worker", and I got one in the barn right now thinking I call it "Jesse James" cause I think it is going to steal my money and time!

Most of the Horse's in my herd only go by their ear tag number, but I did name the one that I built last winter. With the edition of a German diesel engine I wanted to give it a German name. After some thought I decided to let Google translator help me out Wheel = Rad and Horse = Pferd. Took these two names added them together to get "Radpferd"

Just to show that he's not just another pretty face.

Not only does he work hard, he sips very little fuel in the process.

This post made me want to name them all.  Only my GT1642 had a name until now.

GT1642 - Hod Rod.  Dad named it.  Love the way that Briggs idles.

312-8 - Munchies.  Has a Trac Vac on it for leaves.

416-8 - The Barbarian.  Has an Onan.  Needs work.  My local dealer calls them Onan the Barbarian.  Powerful but touchy.

317-8 - Frankie.  Short for Frankinstein.  It's a 1987 310-8 with a 1985 314-8 wiring harness and 1986 KT17.

We name ours to keep them straight because of the number that we do have.  I won’t share the stories of why we named them what we did because it would take up a ton of space but those stories are in their individual threads (should you care to look them up—I always put their name in the thread title)...
