Mudrig150 298 #1 Posted October 31, 2019 First things first, we do not have a non-ethanol gas station within a 70 mile radius. I checked, all the local stations either have the 60% county tax, bringing the price up to like 14$ a gallon, or they've all been shut down due to the local zoning regulations. Any other alternatives? I've already had a carb gasket get melted and the bowl started pouring out gas, and multiple carbs gummed up solid.
rmaynard 15,427 #2 Posted October 31, 2019 Since I have ethanol-free gas available to me, I have never tried any of the additives, but Lucas sells an ethanol remover that costs about $8.00 and will treat up to 80 gallons of gas.

It's bogus.... Those additives that claim to just poof away ethanol do nothing. They do that to sell, so you'll pay a few bucks, then they'll claim it was expired and tell you to buy more. You can't just remove a chemical, it has to become something else. That's how physics work. I've tried them myself, with disappointing results. The water method isn't very helpful either, it removes 30% to 40% of the octane from the fuel, making it harder to burn. So, guess there's just no alternative. Achto 27,502 #5 Posted October 31, 2019 Is there an airport any where near you? The air industry knows how bad ethanol gas is and does not use it in planes. If you have even a small airport near by you may be able to buy gas from them. 2

Also, there are no small airports around. Boat docks can only sell marine diesel. It's stupid. The nearest non-ethanol gas station was closed down due to zoning regulations. You search for it, and it's been replaced by a muffler shop. The second closest one to Monongahela is still an hour and half out. tunahead72 2,403 #7 Posted October 31, 2019 Have you tried the Carousel Marina in Bunola, or Bradigan's Kardgard in Elizabeth? They're both listed on the pure_gas.org web site, much closer to you than 70 miles, at prices less than $5.00 per gallon. The Beach Club Marina in New Eagle might also have ethanol-free gas for you.
Mudrig150 298 #8 Posted October 31, 2019 Local zoning regulations here state that any pump selling Ethanol-free fuel is to be charged a 60% regulation tax, and a lot of small businesses are not willing to. The few gas stations that used to sell ethanol free are now removing it due to the cost, and low buying price. Ethanol is now required in road vehicles for inspection here now, so running a car on ethanol free is strictly prohibited. The site for locating ethanol free has no map, so trying to find one close is tedious.

A 60% local regulation tax doesn't even sound legal, but even if it is you'd be paying less than $8.00 a gallon, which is still cheaper than the canned stuff at your local hardware store or big box. The pure_gas.org site does have mapping software (click "maps"), he says it's broken, but I just used it to find the two stations I mentioned. There's a few other stations a little further out, I would start making some phone calls to the individual stations and see what they can do.

AvGas is most commonly at 100 octane but can also be bought at 80/87 octane. It will have a higher boiling point which may make your engine start a little harder in the winter. Other difference is that Avgas contains lead, which is very bad if you try to run it in a newer car that has sensors and a catalytic converter. In an older engine that was produced before lead free gas it will have little to no ill effect on the engine.

If it has lead in it, even better - your early 70s-on back engines that don't have hardened valve seats will thank you. Also, I'd suggest moving far away from a state that is as backwards as to prevent you from running ethanol-free fuel in a car.

Burnerman 758 #16 Posted November 1, 2019 We have 10% ethanol here at the pumps in NJ. I add Stabil, SeaFoam and I have a small amount of lead substitute left that I add. I have had zero fuel issues. I’m in the Tri state area and can get gas in NY, PA and NJ in a 1/2 hr ride, not sure what their ethanol %’s are though. I can’t believe your county can charge that kind of tax.
JoeM 7,871 #17 Posted November 1, 2019 I get my non E fuel at the interchange in Waynesburg BFS, $3.89 gallon. I seem to use less of it. There are two places in Uniontown and this one in Elizabeth Pa. All closer to you than 70 miles! I have tested the BFS stuff and it is E free. Bradigan's Kardgard - UNBRANDED 770 Hayden Blvd, Elizabeth PA 724-548-7654 Ethanol-free octane ratings: 90 3.80/gal I have used Ethanol shield with poor results, Lucas treatment was much better. I found the shelf life of 10% E fuel is poor. Most of my stuff can tolerate if I rotate out the fuel cans and use the Lucas additive, but since a lot of it sits for weeks at a time I just bit the bullet and switched over with no issues at all.

Just talked to Betty at the Bradigan's in Elizabeth, said she had plenty of non- ethanol 90 at 3.99/gal. It looks to be about a 15 minute drive for you, go get you some.
Mudrig150 298 #19 Posted November 1, 2019 So, after I get the ethanol free fuel, what would be the best way to store it? We have about 4 gas cans, which are currently filled with regular gas. What should I do with all of it?

Add some Seafoam to the gas that you wish to store. 1oz per gallon & the gas should keep for 6 months or more. If you need to empty cans that have ethanol gas in them, why not dump them into your vehicle?? It should keep there until the next time you need to fill up your vehicle again. Now that you have a location to get ethanol free gas that is only 15min away, I don't see a big need to stock pile it. JMO
The Tuul Crib 7,336 #21 Posted November 1, 2019 I have two stations that sell no e here. Around 3.50 a gallon. Theres also a station nearby that sells racing fuel for 7.00 dollars a gallon!!

Should his county or municipality have such a law on the books a lawsuit needs to be filed as it would violate the state's preemption laws. I actually find many parts of this thread to be dubious at best. While Alleghany County does have extra gas taxes I can find no record of a 60% tax on off-road, or non-E fuels. Next, octane is a rating of a fuel's resistance to ignition, so removing octane won't make gas harder to burn. Burnerman 758 #24 Posted November 1, 2019 I just started my snowblower that’s been stored all summer in my shed with 2 pulls. Just stabil in 10% ethanol gas from last winter. I honestly only have fuel issues from water in fuel cans. How long are you guys storing these machines to have these issues?

Seems like there is a bit of misinformation here - he claims 60% tax, Tunahead found ethanol free fuel online near him for less than that (and tax is already already added into fuel price), and you claim there is no such tax. I’m thinking that someone local has incorrectly informed him. Mudrig, is the info you’re posting first hand knowledge or have you been told this? Also, ethanol fuel doesn’t kill your fuel system instantly. Run it regularly and run the fuel bowl dry any time it is going to sit for a extended period of time and you’ll probably be good.
