LOL. Can't get much more redneck than a falling object damaging a Kentucky mans trailer house!

 

The first picture with the damaged corrugated metal made the object look as though it had some sort of "tail". I had to look at that twice!

 

I'd bet it's some object he made up in order to get his 15 seconds of fame.

It's an airbag inflator, for a supplemental restrains system.

 

The physics is very much  like a bullet being fired from a gun, but in normal use they are bolted down very securely and can't move when the airbag deploys.

 

If an airbag is set off outside a vehicle, and not positioned face up it is akin to setting off a bullet outside a gun. That cannister puts out a lot of force but weighs about a pound, so if some redneck a mile up the road was setting off airbags and did one face down, well that cannister goes flying.

  One day when I was working, the H&S decided we should have a safety lecture on the various gases used in the plant. We were told not to transport gas bottles with them lying down. To drive this message home, we were shown a photo' of the drivers side of a van, with the front of the cab missing. The driver had an acetylene bottle in the back lying down, top pointing to the rear, Stopped at some traffic lights and decided to light a cigarette.

  The driver was not sitting in the drivers seat. Well not all of him. Just from  his hips down. Acet' bottle must have had a leak and he hadn't noticed.

I heard a story the other day about a man that took a large propane bottle to a metal recycler to get some money for it.  The metal recycler told him they did not take old style propane (or any propane, acytelen) .  The recycler was cussed out royally by the man  and told that that was their policy and it was for his and the companies employees safety.  The guy who brought the tank than proceeded to  drive his truck with the tnak outside the recycler property to a parking lot and cut up the tank with a portable welder he had with him.  The result was the metal recycler had to call an EMT ambulance to the parking lot as the old propane tank blew up and blew one of the man's leg's off.

 I've made one or two patio heaters from propane tanks. Only after they have been completely empied of liquid gas and have been filled with water for a few days.

That's got to be one half of some kind of turnbuckle or something.  I'm thinking the other side of that knob has a right handed thread.  It's to hold down, or draw something together, but I have no idea what.  Maybe part of an old bailer or something.
