Mickwhitt 4,720 #1 Posted October 25, 2019 What is this mystery object, it's something I intend to transform into a part for my Eaton gear box.

Mickwhitt 4,720 #6 Posted October 25, 2019 It is a hockey puck. Never seen them but was told they are useful for all kinds of things. Solid rubber and it is machinable in the lathe. So I drilled and hollowed one out to make a gear lever gaiter. Hopefully should let water drip clear of the ball joint. 4

Mickwhitt 4,720 #10 Posted October 26, 2019 I fitted the hockey puck over the gear lever and it looks like it will work.
Stormin 9,981 #11 Posted October 26, 2019 Looks like it belongs there. What happens when you move the gear lever? Is it flexible enough?
Mickwhitt 4,720 #12 Posted October 27, 2019 Because it's quite stiff it just sits in place like a kind of umbrella, it's not fixed to the top of the gear casing. It clears everything when the gear lever is moved through the gears so there are no problems with shifting. It's just a work on progress but I think it will do the job. WHX?? 49,164 #13 Posted October 27, 2019 Now that is using the noggin for something other than a hat rack Mick. Wish I could think outside the box like that. Would a bit of silicone around the shifter help seal it to the shaft?
Mickwhitt 4,720 #14 Posted October 27, 2019 Thanks 24, I bought the pucks months ago wondering what on earth I would use them for lol. I drilled the hole undersized so it grips the shift lever tightly. If it moves I will use silicone to seal it in place. Only drawback is I got loads of black stringy turnings all over my lathe lol
