Need new tires but don't know where to buy

Recommended Posts

grammy

I am having a very hard time finding new tires for my old wheel horse lawn tractor. The rear tire says SuperTurf Armstrong 22 x 9.00 - 12. One local tire store says they can sell me 22 x 9.5 - 12 Carlisle Turf Saver for 62.50 but I'm not sure since it's 9.5 and not 9.00. Can anyone help me/advise me? I live in mid-Michigan.

Thank you so much

:WRS:

Here is what those numbers mean.

22 = the over all height on the tire in inches.

9.00 or 9.5 = the width of the tire in inches.

12 = the rim size in inches.

From a 9" wide tire to a 9.5" wide tire would hardly be noticeable. Hope this info helps you out. Good to hear that you are sourcing your parts locally.:handgestures-thumbupright:

The Tuul Crib

You could go with 23 9.50x12.

Deestone is a  good reasonable priced tire. They run a little smaller in size.

I run 10.50 Deestone on my

tractors.

Welcome! The rim diameter ( the -12 part) is the only real critical part. The height and width can vary some without negative consequence. The 22x9.5-12's would work just fine.

With that said, what do you use the tractor for? This would be a good time to figure out of another tread style might suit you better!

What model Wheel Horse do you own?

The last time I saw that size was on a Commando 800.  We have one for my daughter that we call Screamin’ Jimmy.  It now has a more common 23x9.50-12 with no ill effects. Best of luck on your decision, I bet you’ll be fine either way!

Curious did you have change the wheels to go to the 23x9.50-12's? I have a commando 800 and been thinking I might like bigger tires on it.

Anything in the 23x7.50-12 to 23x9.50-12 will look ok with the stock wheels on most wheel horses from 1970 and up. The 23x10.50-12 really needs the bigger wheels from the 520 or they bow out the sidewalls too much imo.

Not so with the "Deestone" or off brand ( @The Tool Crib said above) AGs like I have here on my 315-8...

We haven't used this lawn tractor in years. We gave it to our daughter and the wheels went flat. She had her neighbor help. He ruined the wheel on one front tire but we've found a replacement for that. It was the back tires we are trying to figure out. We will then see how it runs to use for our lawn. We will use it for cutting grass and tilling a garden.

Turf tires are excellent for mowing the lawn. However tilling may need something slightly more aggressive like AG tires or add tire chains on the turf tires.

If you aren’t too far from Middleville, I have various sets of turf and ag tires in different sizes that you could try on for size.  I might even have a good set I could mount up for you.  Like Dan mentioned, if you need any help getting it going just let us know!

You can run 23 x 10.5 x 12 - 4 ply tires on 7" wheels with a lower tire pressure,  but the 2 ply tires will bow up like you say. I have 23 x 10,5 x 12 on mt C-120 and 24 x 9.50 x  12 on my 520 both on 7" wheels.

My commando 800 has 20 inch tires. How could I put 23 inch tires on without changing the wheels? My wheels only measure a little better than 11 inches across.

If they measure 11” across, are they X-XR10” tires?  If they are a 10” wheel, 12” wheels will open up a whole new tire size world.. with the same bolt pattern :handgestures-thumbupright:
