Big Twin Kohler

Pullstart

@ebinmaine found his K532 for the Colossus build by means of an auction genny.  I also last year bought a big old dinosaur genny at the local auction and was amazed at the size when I went to pick it up.

well tonight, I pulled it from the racking for some investigating.  It’s a 24 horse power K662!  The funny thing, the genny is rated at 5 kw and 120 volts!  I figured due to the size that maybe it could be a whole house genny.  Maybe not.

it looks like it was set up as LP powered, but maybe it could convert to gas by a new carb...

Being a 24 horse, it wasn't working very hard on a 5kw generator...

What are your plans for it? Use it on a tractor? I know that generators generally have a rather short, tapered cranksahft output that won't work with much of anything other than a generator. Curious how Eric is going to use his, assuming it has these shortfalls.

If it ever becomes a tractor engine, it’ll be set up without a side PTO.  I know of a certain guy in Redgranite, WI who cut the taper out of a crank with a disc grinder for one of his builds...

For reference, this thing is nearly as wide as Frank!

Here is the cure for the tapered shaft on the engine. This is what I had to use on Radpferd.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Crank-shaft-Adapter-Taper-to-1-1-8-Inch-Generator-Pressure-Washer-Engine/111797583847?epid=1944463646&hash=item1a07a7bfe7:g:wOYAAOSwA4dWHr9t:sc:USPSFirstClass!54970!US!-1

Now as for the LP issue. If it was a Briggs all you would have to do is remove the LP adapter plate from under the carburetor. I'm not sure about the old Kohler L-head engines but here is what I know need to be done to the Kohler OHV engines. New fly wheel - The LP engines had the timing advanced to burn LP more efficiently. New heads - The heads were decked to increase compression to burn LP more efficiently. Last the obvious a new carb. Now I'm not sure that the L-heads had the same changes but I would do my research before looking at a conversion.

Well then again, it could be just a conversation piece!

It's strange that it was only rated at 5kw. 24HP is enough for a 16kw gen. Unless...:confusion-confused: Because it is an 1800RPM / 4 pole generator, they grossly over rated the engine size to get enough power at the low RPM speed.

The oil looks clean, but so far it doesn’t roll over.  Yay!

Dan this thing has a distributor!

Looks like a WICO magneto. If there is a way to rotate it the the timing issue could solved.:greetings-clappingyellow: If I remember correctly the OHV LP engines were set to 26 degrees BTC and the gas engines were at 18 degrees BTC. Don't take these numbers a gospel I'd have to check my books at work to be sure.

I also see it has a modified zenith carb and no electric start... just a hand crank.  I pulled the plugs and tossed some WD-40 in the holes.

The LP regulator appears to be vacuum operated and the LP just sprayed into the intake hat.  Weird stuff!

Actually a quite common set up for small LP or natural gas engines that run at a constant speed. Briggs simply added a spacer with an inlet for the LP/NG under the carb and did not change anything else on the engine. The regulator regulates a constant fuel flow and the original carb is used to meter the air intake. There should also be a fuel solenoid in line to shut the fuel off when the engine is shut off.

For an efficient variable speed engine you would need a liquid withdraw system with an evaporator and a mixer.

Well I pulled the built in pillow out and exposed the crank nut.  It rolls over 1/2 way then feels like it hits rust in the cylinder.  I filled the cylinders with used oil and will let it sit for a long while to soak in.  I might just top off the cylinders once in a while and in maybe a month or two I’ll try to roll it over again.  The roll pin for the hand crank was sheared off, so someone tried hard to get this thing to move!

Looks like an airplane motor to me with horizontally opposed air-cooled cylinders, and the magneto.  Way cool!

Mine was a "counter engine" or possibly out of something like a bobcat.

Lucky for me it has a straight crankshaft.

Check out my Colossus thread.

There's a few pics there to show the size of one of these monsters.

@pullstart

Gotta do it man.

That's a Midwest Colossus brother waiting to happen.

:handgestures-thumbupright: This is actually an antique tractor pulling trick. Install LP heads on a gas engine to bump up the compression for more power.

Back in the 80s and 90s on the old generation small block Chevy there were circle track racers that would swap out heads for the same reason and still maintain stock GM parts.

Neat trick.

How much difference does it make on one of these small twins?

I haven't had the opportunity to play with the small twins much on a performance level. I would guess about a 5 to 10 percent increase in power.

WHX??

How about leaving it LP and a LP powered tractor? Some old tanks/brackets off a forklift. Mount out back for more weight at plow events?

Thought about that Jim, first things first will be checking for full rotation, compression and then spark.  Next’ll be figuring out a fuel source... and what it might fit in!

Did you say a round hood?  :D

I’m thinking long Square hood, mid 60’s.  Maybe with a rear mounted fuel tank.  @PeacemakerJack I should’ve loaded more Work Horse stuff!  :ROTF:  Maybe this’ll be my rendition of a 1045... except longer frame and 24 horsies?

We’ll see how far it makes it.  Priority one... make it run.  I’m learning from EB on that one!  Second, separate the rest of the genny!

I don't know how to ship a long Hood but I've got one you can have if you pay for the freight. 1267 is what it's on now.
