New PTO Clutch Plate Assemblies???!!!!

 Looking for feedback on this to decide if this is a feasible undertaking : since dad closed the doors this spring he's been toying around with bringing some needed parts to market for our Wheel Horses and this is one of the items he came up with. We all know how expensive these are from Toro, and some of us are handy enough to come up with some do-it-yourself solutions but we'd like constructive feedback before we proceed. These are a direct replacement but are 1/16" thicker so it should offer a 50% longer lifespan than a stock replacement. The backer plate is brand new also. We'd be looking at a price of around $55 - $60 shipped. They have been tested and work great. Let me know your thoughts, Thanks.

I think the last one I bought from our old wheel horse dealer up here was a solid $100.00 dollars and that was a couple years ago, so probably more now.

Isn't the original just bonded on as well?  Looks quite a strong construction, go for it.

Earlier years they were riveted and somewhere down the line they switched to bonded. They are interchangeable as long as the diameter are the same. :)

There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

 

A bonded friction material is more likely to come undone, especially if it is something that wears slowly and has a long life, but you can also use more of the material, taking it almost to nothing before damaging the other surface.

The quality looks good. I like the fact that it is a little thicker than stock. I'd rather buy from a Redsquare member then and unknown off of the fleabay or jungle site.

 

I don't have a need for one of these right now but if I did I would buy one from you.

 

I don't picture you selling 38 million of these a year but there is clearly a market.

Was I you I'd make em up...

Mark me down for atleast one, too!
Personally I'd like to find new discs for the old style, slightly smaller clutch used in the late 60s. However I'm sure there is very little demand for those.

You can still by the friction material from Toro for about $45. just got one last week.    Not cheap but  less than having a place like AirBrake resurface them.  If you get one I have a bag of the correct rivets I will give you some.

We have plans to do a batch of the smaller ones too, we were just waiting to see how this went. We have another Discontinued piece that I am finishing up and will get pics posted later this week!

Last yr, the dealeri go to that used to sell WheelHorse wanted exactly thatmuch. Not counting tax.

So yea, i'd buy yours...

Not quite interchangeable. Interchangeable on Old wheel horses, The newer bonded ones the steel plate is thinner. I put a newer on my  1977 C-120 and was ware out the C-clips until I found out what was wrong.

I'm not saying that they won't work on a newer Wheel Horse, but ! think you might have similar problems with the C-clips that hold the PTO sleeve. 

The slot on the PTO sleeve and the thickness of the clutch plate needs to match. It might not be as bad with a thicker clutch plate as a thinner one on my C-120. I had space behind the clutch plate and was putting pressure on the C-clips that hold the sleeve and clutch plate together. I might still have some worn C-clips if anybody want to see them.

 

As for making them i'm sure the old thicker steel plate clutches are not for sale anywhere.
