Burnerman 758 #1 Posted October 19, 2019 So I got a free (I gave the guy $10 so I didn’t feel like I stole it) 72 Commando 800. It’s been well used but someone had been keeping up on its service for the most part. I got it running fairly easily with a new battery and fuel line/ filter. I need to replace the head gasket, clean the carb and a few other things. The drive belt was pretty shredded and there was a bit of noise when you let out the clutch. I pulled the belt guard off today and found the belt had been running under the clutch stop tab. I measured the old one and it’s an 82”. I had a decent used 82” backup belt for my C101 in the garage so I put it on. It’s better but it seems too long. The backside belt rides the top and bottom of the belt guard when the clutch is engaged. There’s little to no clearance between the guard and the backside of the belt. Everything I find says this takes the 5L820 belt. Does anyone have any ideas? The belt size is about the only thing that one of the PO’s didn’t write down with marker on this tractor. 😁We changed the trans oil today too. Eww. It was mega think latte looking stuff. My son noticed the stickers on the new brake band. 😲 I may take a ride up to Dombrowskis and show them some pictures to see if they remember this one. 6 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I’ve got the manual. It calls for a 7473 belt which is a 5L820. That’s what I have on it. All of the pulleys are stock. It just seems too long. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Burnerman 758 #8 Posted October 26, 2019 So, I had to do a 20 hr shift yesterday but I have too much tractor stuff to do. Lol. Home at 5 am and up at 8. i put the new belt, v idler and spring. I also checked my engine pulley and found the set screws were loose It still has about an 1/8th of an inch clearance to the belt guard. The new spring is MUCH tighter so there is a lot less slap. I got all the parts for the mower deck today and my son welded up the cracks around the one side spindle. I got it all together and tried to mulch up some leaves. I found out that I need to rebuild this engine too. Lol. It has a knock to it but I still haven’t cleaned the carb and replaced the head gasket. Burnerman 758 #11 Posted October 28, 2019 Ok. Lol. I drained the “oil” today. Too much aluminum! I did get to chop up my leaves and found out this tractor fits my yard perfect! Super nimble. She’s gunna get a full engine overhaul! @ebinmaine I found the points set at .024. Prolly bee running advanced for awhile and the oil not changed enough. Burnerman 758 #12 Posted November 16, 2019 Pulled the head on the 800, in my new “tractor OR”. A lot of piston slop. Looks like someone has been in here WAY too much. There’s file marks on the block😳. The piston is stamped .003. The head is badly warped. The head gasket actually looks new. There’s no slop in the rod but it needs a bore and piston. Oh that came right off , it was a cast iron pulley. It was wallowed out bad. I couldn’t use it. The PO had actually wedged a shim in on the one flat to take up the slop. It wobbled bad. I found a NOS steel replacement. I really didn’t have any issues with any of the deck pulleys of this one. If you’ve got a stuck double D deck pulley the only thing I can recommend is a lot of penetrating oil and use a heat gun to warm the pulley to help draw the oil in. Burnerman 758 #16 Posted November 17, 2019 I got to measure the cylinder yesterday. It’s 2.943. The piston is stamped .003. Is this a factory oversized piston? I checked the head with a straightedge and it was warped right where the gasket was leaking. I had a good head in the garage to replace the one on the tiller that’s got a heli coil in the spark plug hole. I put that head on and a fresh gasket until I find a good shop to machine the block. Low and behold I guess I shoulda checked the block! It’s leaking in the same spot! I hope the block can be machined flat again. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Burnerman 758 #17 Posted November 18, 2019 Ok, I need a new torque wrench and drink less beer when working on tractors lol 🤭🧐I went to pull the head today to check the block and the head bolts were just more then hand tight. I did a compression test and I soaped the head to see where the leaks are and they were everywhere. 😂😂 Also during the compression test I put my new spark tester on the plug lead. I saw a great blue spark and then saw the huge yellow spark from the condenser case to ground. Tightened the head down good and replaced the condenser. Runs better now but still has the slight rod knock. We also dug into the V7 tonight and it’s prolly going to get repowered. 3 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
