The Tuul Crib 7,338 #1 Posted October 15, 2019 Seems now when you order something off of eBay they hit you up with sales tax. This apparently this just started. No matter where you go or what you do you're always making the fools at the White House Rich !
ebinmaine 69,681 #2 Posted October 15, 2019 Depends on the laws of the state that you are in, or the state that it is sold from.
The Tuul Crib 7,338 #3 Posted October 15, 2019 My understanding it's across the board and the amount is set up by the state which here in Tennessee is 9.5%
Achto 28,165 #4 Posted October 15, 2019 I kinda wondered how long they would be able to get around sales tax. I never figured that it would've taken Mr. Tax man this long to catch up with this type of commerce. 2
ebinmaine 69,681 #5 Posted October 15, 2019 That could be. I can't say I've really looked into it because Maine as always dictated that you pay sales tax on everything that you buy, no matter where you buy it. if you buy something out of state you're supposed to pay something called a USE tax but it's the same percentage. C-85 710 #6 Posted October 15, 2019 I live in Vermont and we have a sales tax, which like anyone we hate paying. But I've seen many of our good old brick and mortar businesses go out of business, mainly due to internet sales, so this is troubling. It doesn't seem fair to pay tax on something purchased in Vermont, and then find out this can be bypassed by purchasing something online from out of state. How is this fair to our business's here? As I said we hate paying tax, but this is killing our local business which we also hate, so I guess I'm glad they are finally charging this from Amazon, Ebay, etc, as this will make the playing field much fairer. Our state lost revenue from some of this too, so I think this can be good. C-85 1
Mudrig150 301 #7 Posted October 15, 2019 (edited) We have a local shop here that went out of business because the city figured out he wasn't paying sales tax and they fined him for all the sales tax he owed, which was quite a bit. They bumped it up to tax evasion, even though he was just exploiting a loophole and not breaking any laws. He's out now, but he's broke. SPINJIM 1,981 #8 Posted October 15, 2019 It's ILLEGAL to charge sales tax on postage in Pennsylvania, but ebay is still charging it on the shipping cost. I have to wonder if ebay is actually passing that tax along to PA, or if they are just pocketing the illegal tax on shipping/postage. I've become discouraged with selling and buying on ebay. Friend is selling on Facebook Marketplace with better success. Think I'll try it, eventhough I'm not a fan of Facebook. Jim
CasualObserver 3,410 #9 Posted October 15, 2019 It's all due to this. Supreme Court case.... S Dakota v Wayfair Most states have use tax as Eric mentioned... and if anyone actually paid it, this never would have happened.
Achto 28,165 #10 Posted October 15, 2019 Sales tax is not outrageous here in WI only 5% or if you live in certain counties 5.5%. One sales tax that I have an issue with is on a used vehicle. Every person that purchases a single vehical has to pay sales tax. So in retrospect if a vehical is sold 10 times from new until it is salvaged, then sales tax is paid on that same vehical 10 times. Some how this just don't seem right to me. 3
953 nut 56,696 #11 Posted October 15, 2019 A few years ago North Carolina has added a nuisance fee to the income tax to cover internet purchases, even if you didn't make any.

In extreme cases, 10%tax X 12 resales, the tax may be more than the MSRP. The requirement or a vehicle to be registered is what makes this tax enforceable. Even if a car, truck, motorcycle, or boat is bought in a state that does not have a sales tax, when the vehicle is registered in a state with a sales tax, there is a paper trail that allows the state to collect he tax. Many set up a legal address in non tax states to overcome some of these taxes and high registration fees. Let's hope we never have to register our tractors. 1

In PA you have to register ATVs/Dirt bikes/snowmobiles if you are going to be driving them on certain public trails. If it never leaves your private property you don't have to have it registered, but some municipalities require that unregistered vehicles must be stored inside.

Thats another benefit of ‘s... No ORV tax for “ORVs” that cruise at the speed of manatees...! Cost about 95% less too!

What are they going to do, come on your property and check if your 4 wheeler is registered? Just another way for the state to screw you out of more money.. Do ATV's even have titles? I know mine don't. Last week I ordered something off of Rockauto and noticed that it had tax added onto it.. I've ordered from them hundreds of times and have never seen it tacked on until now. Must be some new law in effect.

I still remember the Harrisburg campaign a few years ago to require all boats to be titled. "This requirement is necessary to help protect the boat owner from boat theft." My homeowners policy already protected my boats from theft. But, with 350,000 boats registered and $50 for a title and $50 for registration, got a quick $35 million into the state coffers (401Ks). Don't be surprised when you hear about a state plan to prevent lawn mower theft. 1

Here everything is required to titled and registered and now even paddle freakin canoes! I had a little 14 ft old row boat I wanted to re-register me being the law abider I am. Was told by the DNR I couldn't because it was made without a vin!!! Looks like I am outlawing it!
Ed Kennell 39,716 #23 Posted October 16, 2019 All motor powered (gas diesel, and electric) boats must be titled and registered. Non powered boats only require launch permits for use on state waters which is just about all water except a private pond.

Boats under 16 feet do not require a title in WI.
Dakota8338 115 #25 Posted October 19, 2019 I am sure it will eventually become universal taxation, regardless of where one lives, but at the present time, at least on our last e-bay purchases since the first of this month, we pay taxes on some purchases and some purchases are not taxed. The same is true of Amazon. I will not try and explain further, because I do not know all the details, but one thing I know for certain. If the vendor one is purchasing from has a physical location doing business in our state, we will be charged tax!
