Belt tensioner ?

Recommended Posts

The Tuul Crib

I'm putting a new drive belt on my

414-8 And I'm just curious if this is the belt tensioner to adjust the belt.

No that is a damper that lets the belt get tight slowly and makes starting out smoother. Someone will be along and be able to explain it better I am sure. Welcome.

Think of more like a shock absorber instead of that fast belt lock up like on the older models that cause you to pull a wheelie even if you side step the clutch pedal at WOT in 3rd Hi it won't pop a wheelie with the damper (unless it's bad) have it on my 315-8 much more pleasurable to drive that the older 312-8.

I don't guess there's any adjustments needed. It seems to operate correctly

Upon takeoff .  No Willie thank goodness !  It did feel like it was slipping some so I'm replacing the belt with a new one .  Rather do it now then have to do it later when there's snow on the ground !

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how a piece of threaded rod is a dampener. Maybe there is a small shock absorber somewhere outside of the picture?

If it is just a piece of threaded rod, it may require some adjustment after the belt is replaced. The new belt should be shorter than your old one (obviously, otherwise it would still slip), but that doesn't mean it is the same length as your current belt was when new. Could be shorter or longer for all we know!

The number 53 shows the spring loaded plunger in it that does the magic. I call it an air shock. There is a hole in the back end for the air to enter and exit. That passage will get plugged up with dirt and grass clippings. Usually they can be cleaned up and put back into service.

Notice how the belt idler is up against the plugger in the above photo.

With the belt on the damper needs to be adjusted so the plunger is still visible plus a bit to allow for belt wear.

If the belt idler hits the threaded part of the damper you will lose drive belt tension.

#53 is part number 114134
