Mudrig150 298 #1 Posted October 10, 2019 We got this old thing last night. Guy had it listed for 200$ along with a craftsman with a blown motor. He took 100$ for just the snapper. Only 1 of 2 tractors I have that have almost been able to run before we get them. Noticed the original keys looked really nice, and when we got home, I checked the hour meter. 560 hours. Garage kept, up until the month or two the guy was working on it. This is hands down, the NICEST one of these I have ever seen. Needs a new ignition switch or solenoid, it continues to turn over when you let off the key. It also only runs for 30 seconds, then sputters and dies, and then it starts right back up and does it again. It's not a spark issue, I'm thinking stuck float needle in carb, maybe.
ebinmaine 67,498 #2 Posted October 10, 2019 Sounds like if you rebuild the carb you'd have a nice running machine
Mudrig150 298 #3 Posted October 10, 2019 So, it's a 1989. So that makes my roster of tractor years very diverse. 1963 (Burns), 1969 (Larry), 1982 (317), and now, 1989 (Snapper). I used to have 1974, 1977, 1975, and 1995 but they are past tractors.
Mudrig150 298 #4 Posted October 10, 2019 3 words. Adjustable. Steering. Wheel. They made it with thought, and not plastic. Most parts that are all plastic on other lawn mowers is steel/aluminum on this thing. Even the dash is pressed steel with a plastic top for looks.
Mudrig150 298 #5 Posted October 11, 2019 Well, figured out the issue. Put a new fuel filter on and only a few drips of fuel through after sitting for 30 minutes. Fuel line was full of crap. New fuel line and fuel flows strong. Too bad the key switch burned up. Guess it needs a new one.
Mudrig150 298 #6 Posted October 14, 2019 Thinking I might just find some 5 bolt hubs for a 1" shaft and putting them on because the rims on it are horribly worn out.
Mudrig150 298 #7 Posted October 22, 2019 Cleaned carb today. Pulled the jets and blasted them out with carb cleaner. Jets are 8.5 turns in on a normal Walbro Adjustable carb, one was set to 10 turns. No fuel was getting in. Tried to start it, starter gear got stuck to flywheel and then the starter stopped, and blew out smoke. Ugh. Can't get to the starter to pull it out. Thanks Snapper AND kohler.
Pullstart 62,879 #8 Posted October 22, 2019 I don’t know the model, but a guy named Jason had a big snapper at J&C’s plow day last weekend, it was an all out beast!

That's a snapper 1855, by the looks of it. The big snapper. Very interesting. My YT18H is getting 16x6.50-8 front tires on it, 5 bolt hubs on the back with ag tires, and if the pump allows, a hydraulic lift.
Mudrig150 298 #10 Posted October 24, 2019 Mocked up different wheel offsets for when the wheel horse hubs are put on. Cub rims ended up fitting the best. Gonna order them from the tool crib tonight. Pulled deck, and man. This thing has a LOT of ground clearance in the middle. Like, 10 inches. Only issue is that the transmission hangs down, and brings that down to 6 inches at the back... But I'd be able to mid mount attachments easily. Tried getting starter out... Pulled muffler cover, muffler, PTO, driveshaft, and the rear motor mount bolts but STILL need 1/4" more lift on the front of the motor. Motor mount is hitting the frame in the front... Going to have to pull the whole front axle to remove the front motor-cradle bolts. Gotta adjust the axle bolt anyway... Might put my M14 in this thing for a while. What pan would I need to get the right crank height?

Those 1855 came with a two speed hydro, Same tractor as a Massey Ferguson 1855 with a Sundstrand 15 inline type. Edited November 1, 2019 by Lee1977
Mudrig150 298 #12 Posted November 4, 2019 Motor out again... This time for the last time. Found that a magnum 14 with the wide base deep pan has the same crank height as the M18, and just needs an adapter plate to fit.
