keitholdcar 17 #1 Posted October 8, 2019 I am trying to find the capacity of the transmission in a 14 Automatic.Looking for the service capacity, not dry,or new capacity.I understand I am supposed to use Dextron now.I find that kind of funny,as when my 12 Automatic was new in 1973 the dealer harped on us to use hydrostatic fluid, and NOT any form of automotive ATF. I have a 14 Automatic now that I have reason to believe the oil is original. The filter is original, and the drain plug is still painted in.The tractor has original paint and the paint on the plug has never been cracked. The oil in it is clean, and does have a slight reddish tint, but mostly golden. It does not smell burnt, but does smell old. pfrederi 17,874 #2 Posted October 8, 2019 If it is ATF in there now then use Dex/Merc. (Dexron3 compatible) Smear the dipstick on a clean paper towel and see what color you get. Depending on how well drained the system is you will need between 4 and 5 qts. Wix 51410 for the filter.
keitholdcar 17 #3 Posted October 8, 2019 Thanks.I am thinking this is not ATF or hydrostatic oil.It is more gold than red,but it smells more like hydraulic oil than motor oil or ATF.It is old oil though, and smells it.I got right up close to the drain plug with a magnifying glass, and when I broke it loose with a socket I saw the paint break loose from the plug.It had never been disturbed until I did it.I don't know what this tractor would have come with in 1973.I used to buy hydrostatic oil for my 73 12 Automatic,I worked at a JD dealer and always bought it there. At some point that was no longer available, and was told to use ATF.Right now I'm not sure what to use in it.I am using ATF in two others,12 and 16 Automatics.I guess the thing to do is to use ATF like the others. pfrederi 17,874 #4 Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) To my knowledge WH never used Hydraulic oil in the Sunstrands but who knows what dealers or previous owners used. Back then WH shipped tractors with no oil in the engine but the transmissions were filled. 1973 owners manuals said ATF After all these years if it is original I think I would drain it completely then refill with your choice ATF or Motor oil run it for a few minutes dump it an refill again. keitholdcar 17 #5 Posted October 9, 2019 I drained it out,and in a glass jug the old oil does have a reddish tint in the light.Interestingly enough, when I took the plug out there was no accumulation of dirt,or slime of any kind on the plug.Usually there is at least something, but this was just old, clean, oil, and was probably darkened by age.Where it came out with no slime I think I will be alright by just changing it.I think the filter is original, and I cut it apart to look inside of it.The paper in it had turned to pulp. This tractor has not been run for many years,so when I started the engine I had the drive belt off it to be safe. That way if the trans had water, sludge, mud, etc.I would not be mixing it up.I am glad I did, that pulpy filter would not have been good to circulate around.
