HokieAg07 129 #1 Posted October 6, 2019 Its been a while but I have an idea but wanted some input before I mess with it. PTO will disengage by itself after moving in reverse for a little bit. No problems in forward of course. Thinking I have trunnion adjusted a bit too tight and somehow in reverse it allows the PTO to disengage?
troutbum70 857 #2 Posted October 6, 2019 Do you maybe have an electric pto and for some reason the wire harness is near to the shifter and when in reverse the wires are pinched and shorting out causing it to disengage? Will be interested to find what far better minds have to say.
Stepney 2,325 #3 Posted October 6, 2019 Interesting issue .. and reverse should make no difference. However it may be set a little too tight, that will make them kick out,

I am wondering if pulling the direction lever (tower mounted) puts enough tension in the tower that it causes the PTO lever to spring back due to how tight the trunnion is.
Stepney 2,325 #5 Posted October 6, 2019 Hmm .. any cracks in the tower? That would definitely be possible.
Racinbob 11,040 #6 Posted October 6, 2019 Electric PTO? What tractor are we dealing with? If it's electric and one of the later years it may have a safety switch that disengages the PTO if it put in reverse. My 2005 had one.

Racinbob 11,040 #8 Posted October 6, 2019 Yup, you're right on that. I don't have a clue now. Please let us know what you find.

peter lena 8,580 #10 Posted October 6, 2019 definitely think its a trunion engagement issue , i regularly use my pto mower deck engagement without any issues while mowing. if you inspect your lever to trunion engagement areas , they are typically very sloppy in set up and operation, typically never lubricated for soothe easy use. its amazing how adding washers to the pto lever area , will tighten up and give you lever advantage on that rod. detailed this area on my tractors , along with steering column flange bearing , to totally get rid of a poorly finished design, pete

Certainly a strange problem I agree sounds like the transmission is loose or the transmission mount is broken.

All is well. 1
