SylvanLakeWH 25,493 #1 Posted October 6, 2019 (edited) So here we go again...As soon as I finished up the last wheel barrow conversion I knew the Wheel Horse & Sylvan Lake Western RR was gonna need more capacity...two simply wasn’t enough to meet the demands of the nieces & nephews... So... I saved an old folding chair cart from the scrapper along with some beat up old metal folding chairs... It will hold 4 chairs in line. Plan is to put in a floor, secure the chairs, add seat belts, paint frame red, chairs and hitch black. Thinking of using extra set of rears that came with my recent WHrat WHrecker build...should raise whole thing up to perfect height for level platform... Will become car #3 in the Wheel Horse & Sylvan Lake Western RR... seating for 6-8 depending on passenger size... Pic of the frame so far and the existing RR cars it will attach to... SylvanLakeWH 25,493 #4 Posted October 6, 2019 Mock up # 1: Floor or is going to be plywood with this white wall board left over from some long forgotten project (the acorns are a bonus): All for now!
Lee1977 6,647 #5 Posted October 6, 2019 I think you should scrap the folding chair idea and come up with another plan.

Thinking u bolts for fastening seats to trailer. They will be very secure but I want them removable for other trailer use and long term storage. Seat belts will be included / attached. Thinking fastex buckles with webbing fastened to chairs. The cart has 1.25” socket holes on all four corners. They were for the cart handles. I was thinking of putting a metal pole rail at arm rest height front to back anchored with pins at those holes. Perhaps sided for added safety...? Appreciate the ideas and questions! Want it to work and be safe!
ebinmaine 67,286 #9 Posted October 7, 2019 With the anchors and side rails it seems to me you'd be headed the right direction. Just be sure to keep your axle as WIIIIDE as possible for stability. I like the large tires you've mocked up. That'll help as well. Weighted would be even better. Load the people larger to front. Keeps the weight on the hitch. 1

Pullstart 62,799 #11 Posted October 7, 2019 If you progressively trim the seat legs, you’d have yourself stadium seating! 3

Was thinking (always dangerous) of trimming all chair legs to the cross supports to lower center of gravity and make attachment to trailer easier with u bolts...your use may come in to play as well... Also working on a design using the old seat pan / fenders from the WHrat WHrecker for fenders at the axle / wheel point. This is gonna be low speed kids only so leg height won’t be an issue... I like that quite a lot. Set that right down on top of your frame or take a measurement or two and cut that sucker right down the middle or whatever and use 90-degree brackets to hold it somehow. That would be a great use of leftover parts, add a cool look, and add safety. 1
SylvanLakeWH 25,493 #14 Posted October 10, 2019 Floor is in! Still working out seating arrangement but getting there... Thinking partial wood sides... Need hubs and an axle still...
SylvanLakeWH 25,493 #15 Posted October 11, 2019 Sides are up! They are going to be Regal Red. Its even gonna be a Black Hood! Also change of seating plans...The folding chairs just weren’t gonna cut it...going with milk crates with thin butt pads...kids are gonna have to rough it...crates are gonna be black...lower center of gravity and way easier to attach / take apart... Also gonna stick with the existing wheels... true railroad style... it will get minimal use at very slow speed, asphalt only...so we shall see how they hold up...I expect to be putting some wheels on it next summer... The “Train” Plan is: 1) tractor... 2) large wheel barrow conversion (tender)... 3) 4 person passenger car... 4) small wheel barrow conversion (caboose)... @Vinylguy has already been contacted to start graphics order for the “Sylvan Lake & Wheel Horse Western RR” banners

SylvanLakeWH 25,493 #17 Posted October 12, 2019 Done with all but graphics!!! Test run (Empty) went great!!! Very happy with it. On the look out for a train bell and a horn...neighbors should be thrilled... Just need graphics and the nieces and nephews!!! Not necessarily in that order... Went with built in seats instead of milk crates...can’t give up that many of my go to saw horses! @AMC RULES and @pullstart please note the obligatory adult beverage in the photo op... 2 2

Pullstart 62,799 #21 Posted October 14, 2019 I’m not partaking in beverages right now, but here’s a clink for ya on the good work, Jim! We got this glass from @HorseFixer at a meet and greet some years back and I might have forgotten about it. It was found recently and Mrs. P had to remind me where it came from! I recall us getting her a tea mug, but didn’t recall this etched big mug. 2
SylvanLakeWH 25,493 #22 Posted October 17, 2019 Two things: 1. I want a set of those mugs @pullstart!!! Source? Cost? Inquiring minds want to know! 2. First batch of Terry’s masterpiece banners arrived!!! Thank you @Vinylguy??? Can’t wait for the remaining decals!!! You May note that the SL & WHW has been renamed to the SL & WHN...No, there was no corporate takeovers or bankruptcy proceedings...just got to thinking that the Great State of Michigan is more North than West and so I made the unilateral decision to change the RR’s name...As the only shareholder I am comfortable with the decision... First run tomorrow afternoon with the little guys...will advise on their QA / QC feedback...
SylvanLakeWH 25,493 #23 Posted October 19, 2019 (edited) QA / QC crew was rigorous and thorough in their analysis last evening! Much hemming and hawing about who got to sit where... However, even the big kids and adults wanted in on the action! Overall very pleased with the design and results!!! Two modifications will be made based on beta testing: 1. link to the tractor will become fixed instead of pivoting at both the tractor and trailer. 2. Will replace original hard rubber tires with air filled...too much vibration... 26044E77-E5AD-4105-A65D-56DA1F7103AE.MOV Edited October 19, 2019 by SylvanLakeWH 3
