Tire opinions

So I am tire shopping, probably for my primary plow tractor, and I want some opinions on treads. I have read that turfs are better in slick than ags, but I will be going with a more aggressive ag style tread.

 

I have it narrowed down to basically the Carlisle Tru Powers (white wheel),or Trac Chiefs. (orange wheel).

 

The Tru Powers are very similar to what is on there now, and I like those tires, they are really only getting replaced because they are old and dry rotted, they still hold air, grab, and have half decent tread.

 

The Trac Chiefs look interesting, but I'm not sure how they will perform in various terrain conditions. This tractor mostly sees grass and will get plow duty on wet/slippery pavement.

 

I want to stick with a more aggressive lugged tire because parts of my yard can get very wet in the early spring and late summer, and are basically impassible with turfs.

@WVHillbilly520H Jeff has had really good luck with the R4 tread like you show on the orange wheels. I don't know if he's using them on a four-wheel drive tractor.

 

I use both of those on the Moffitt brand demountable forklifts at work and I FAR prefer the Carlisle ag/bar tread of the TruPowers.

 

That is the exact tire that I use on the Cinnamon horse for snow removal.... Weighted with both fluid and steel and running ice cleat chains.

Thanks. Hopefully he will chime in on those. I have no complaints about the ones on the rear of the 855 so far (I think they are TruPowers, just old), so I may stick with them. I was interested in the Trac Chiefs because they are the same price, but the name implies (not that you can trust that these days) that they may actually be better for traction.

 

 

 

Next big question is, where can you still get 22.5x7.50? I can't find any anywhere.

To the best of my knowledge that isn't a size you can get in an ag tire anymore.

 

I believe you would be okay using a 23 x 8 x 12.

 

Are your current Carlisle Tru Powers that 22.5?

I'm shopping for both tractors right now, even though it is likely I'll one re-shoe one horse this fall, especially since I still need to buy chains.

 

The 855 has 23x8.50 in back and 16x5.50 up front.

 

The 800 has 22.5x7.50 in the rear and 15x6.00 in front.

 

The 15x6.00 is still a common tire size, but I can't find anything for that 22.5 inch rim on the back. I may let those go until spring and buy new wheels for the back that are 23 inches.

22.5 or 23 should be the outside diameter of the tire. The rims should both be a 12.

Derp. It's been a long day, I was not thinking about how massive a 22.5 inch rim would be.

 

Maybe when it come time to buy I'll just get a set of each of those tires, one for each tractor, and see which ones I like better for myself.

Yes I have R4s on both my compact 4WD tractors and fluid filled (no extra steel weights as there are no provisions in the wheels) without front axle assist they aren't the best in winter conditions without chains... Now on my 520s I personally have bought and installed the OTR LAWN TRAC R1 AGs with fluid and steel weights (no chains) and so far have done better than my old Nankings with chains... just my personal experiences.

I’m running the trac chiefs.  I have pushed some stone around the driveway with no traction issues and no additional weight.   Haven’t plowed snow yet, maybe this year. They are also easy on the lawn. Overall I like them.
